The benefits of proper swimming

Anyone can swim but to know the proper and scientific swimming is different, once a person knows this then he could get the benefits of swimming more than anyone who can swim.

The benefits of proper swimming :

• Gives good shape and proper body posture
• Improves cardiovascular system
• Strengthens muscles
• Develops confidence and eliminates fear of injuries
• Loss in weight

Updates on Buko

As I woke up today , my stomach craves for something,

Something that is so refreshing at the same beneficial. So before taking any solid food , I'd rather look for a buko vendor.

In U.P. Wet and Dry market Fresh Malauhog Buko Juice is only 18.00 pesos, not bad compared to other buko vendor who sells buko for 20.00 pesos.

A few days ago I posted the benefits of drinking fresh buko juice :

  • refreshing and rehydarating

  • treats urethral stones and kidney

  • acts as blood plasma substitute

  • electrolytic

  • good source of potassium

  • naturally organic

  • vegetarian friendly, it’s tropical.

Alice Dixon, I can feel it !

Alice Dixon, I can feel it ! Oh yeah !
You're fresher than a fish, all I can say to you Alice is Oh yeah !
Oh yeah baby ! you really rock !

Who is Alice Dixon?

  • the most memorable Dyesebel

  • rumored actress in urban legend Alice Dixon + Robinson's sawa

  • endorser of Palmolive

  • I wanna meet Alice Dixon, Oh yeah !

1999, she migrated to Canada where her celebrity webmaster Ronnie Miranda is based.

Here's the video of Palmolive where she became famous for the line " I can feel it ! " yeah !

I love Alice Dixon and I've got a crush on her !

I've been a regular audience since the first episode of Talk to Doc aired on ANC. The latest health care show hosted by Maricel Laxa and Doc Oyi Balburias, I've also been a regular questioner ( Yes , Im the guy ! ), This morning I asked Doctor Bengzon , an orthopedic specialist if
" Ano ang pwedeng gawin para hindi maulit ang injury ? "

  • Proper Training

  • That includes warm up and using of protective gears.

  • Wait for at least 2-3 weeks before doing injury causing sport.

  • General Health

  • One should be in proper physical condition before doing any sport.

Doctor Bengzon also shared some first aid tips whenever an injury occurs :

  • do not manipulate the injury

  • apply ice

  • go to a specialist immediately

My Writing Project Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs for 2010

A few days ago I decided to have my own domain hosted in wordpress platform, and then I exported all of my previous post from my old blogspot. It has been sometime since my blogger friends suggested that I put up a veggie blog so there, it's done.

I don't want to sound egotistic, but I've been rooting around in the internet world for a Filipino vegetarian site, and i find very few, if any, sites about it. So, at the risk of sounding prideful, I decided to submit my vegetarian blogsite to this competition I just found out about: the Writing Project Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs for 2010.

According to the rules :

  • Old blogs who move to a new domain are disqualified

  • Blogs who remove their archives just to fit in the cut-off date are disqualified.

Then again, to be safe, (as well as being conscious with the filipipno adage about "nagbubuhat ng sariling bangko", I’d rather not vote for my own blog but look for Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs which is somehow veggie related, and here goes my list:

healthblogs.org - Health Blogs at HealthBlogs.org

A free health blogs and free health web sites community

pinoyorganics.com - a blog by Pinoy Organics

I like this blog because it promotes organic living, vegetarianism is close to this lifestyle.

teacompletely.com - A blog written by two tea connoisseurs, Andrew dela Serna and Aileen Apolo.

I am also a tea explorer, I think I will learn different teas in this blog.

fatgirlnomore.com - A health blog by Teacher Ria.

I like this blog because it inspires fat people to aim for weight loss, I know a lot of vegetarian and non veg people who are fat, it's really not about the food they eat but the whole lifestyle , maybe that's the reason why they are fat. I'd like to know more.

manilareviews.com - a blog by the Manila Reviews Team

I like this blog because it features vegetarian restaurants in the metro.

healthtree.com - A health blog

I like to connect  to a community who are passionate about health

facebuko.com – a humor blog by Jonas Roque

I like this blog because I always drink fresh buko juice.

nomnomclub.com - A food blog by Jonel Uy

I like this blog because I'd like to drink Veggies and Mixed Fruit Juice.

healthtips2u.com - A Health Care Blog
I like searching about Personal Health Care – Common Diseases, Conditions, Treatement, Health Tips and Advice!

wheninmanila.com - A news blog by Vince Golangco.

I like this blog because he once featured Yogi's Bar, I'd like to become a Yogi, that's why I went vegetarian.

This Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs writing project aims to promote bloggers and share how they were able to influence people through their expression of thoughts, sharing of knowledge and insight, and events reporting or coverage.

Green Wok Deli & Café

Repost from Green Wok Deli & Café

They specializes in authentic vegetarian food.

We take pride in our FILIPINO DISHES like veggie SISIG, veggie DINUGUAN, veggie ADOBO, veggie HUMBA, veggie PAKSIW, veggie PANCIT, veggie BARBECUE MAGIC, veggie curry...

We offer Greenlife Coffee with guava extract, gotu kola, pandan, agaricus mushroom, non-dairy soya creamer, sweetened with high quality bee pollen-no sugar added

We also serve nutritious beverages- fruit based, herbal based veggie juice sweetened with stevia, Halal certified Greenlife coffee, and other upland choice coffee beans.

Green Wok came about not only because there is a market out there for healthy vegetarian food. The thinking that it is so much kinder, and gentler, to eat without having to kill is also as much a part of what brought it about.

"Whether for health reasons or due to ethical concerns, more and more people are rejecting animal products and turning instead to a vegetable-based diet and realizing that there is life after meat, after all."-Linda Fraser, (2004) Vegetarian.

Farmville and My Mom

We used to live in the province, life there was simple. My family is very happy, we eat, pray and love together. We have a small farm , we plant fruits and vegetables. Especially my mom, among all she has the time to plant crops. She really likes planting. She has a nice figure because she has an active lifestyle. Planting was her exercise. Somehow she becomes busy by doing that. Despite of that she makes sure that she can give time to us.

We are now staying in Manila , life here is pressure and full of tension. There's no farm anymore. It was hard to adjust. We were introduced to internet technology. Everyday my mom plays farmville, she is online 24/7. She has no time for us anymore, all she does is planting crops, then harvest when needed. She gained weight so much. And she was so absorbed by the future. I am worrying about her already, she behaves differently. From the day she learned farmville, she gave almost all of her time there.

Future communication technology promotes danger. The more it gives comfort, the more it becomes risky. Yes it makes work faster, but it brings suffering in return. It is still recommended to engage in offline activities wherein there is interaction. Awareness is important. It's a feeling where presence creates a big factor.

Ascof Lagundi

Ascof Lagundi is a commercialized herbal medicine for cough remedy.

How Much ?

In Mercury Drug , the price of Ascof Lagundi capsule is 6.75 each and you can take it 2-3 times a day.

So far it has not been studied as much as that with regular medications, better ask a doctor before taking this.

Although there's a Lucy Torres ad saying it is clinically proven safe and effective , It would still be better if you ask a doctor before taking this.

Rumor about this: Ascof Lagundi tests on Animals. ( to be confirmed )

Vegetarianism

Vegetarianism

Vegetables symbolizes peace and melody,
Every time we eat plants , we don't kill them, in fact we help them grow more in order to feed more creatures.
Go vegetarian and you will not regret,
Except meat , eat a lot.
Time can never mend, you will stay young when you adopt plant based diet,
Approved by many health authority.
Remember when you eat plants, you get good health and you help the environment.
" I will keep that in mind. "
And I will share as well !
No meat, pork, chicken and seafoods !
I like peace and melody
Since fruits and vegetables are plants,
More than anything else these are great food.

DRIVE THE GREEN ROAD welcome remarks

Today we celebrate the opening of our 3rd Philippine International Motor Show, the country’s flagship auto show.

Change, as they say, is in the air. And the Philippine auto industry is at the verge of major changes. For the first time, auto sales could surpass the highest sales ever achieved in 1996 of 162,000 units. We are growing at a rate of 37% so far. High consumer and business confidence continues. And the second half of the year is looking pretty good.

Global observers echo the same bullish sentiment. The economic growth forecast has been raised to 5.5%. Money sent home by OFWs is hitting a record high, at $18 billion. Meanwhile, banks continue to aggressively lend, giving auto buyers easy access to funds, to finance their purchases.

The momentum has turned positive, with expectations that our President Aquino can steer the economy in the right direction.

The local auto industry has shown remarkable resiliency. Despite the recent global recession, and the burden of auto smuggling, we have achieved growth year after year. Resilience, however, should not be taken for granted. Without smuggling, the growth could have been stronger; the increase in sales higher, and job creation, greater.

The auto industry is one of the Philippines’ few remaining major industries. What we have in common with our ASEAN neighbors, is the prohibition of imported used vehicles. Sadly, what sets us apart is the lack of the strict implementation of that ban. Without it, the auto industry cannot achieve its full potential.

A stop to smuggling is a green light to a bigger domestic auto market which in turn is a go for immediate job creation.

This then is our HOPE and a wish for a more vibrant auto industry, a bigger auto market, and for more employment.

Change is in the air. A brighter future for the auto industry, for its autoworkers, and for the economy can become a reality.

We are thankful that part of the President’s top priority includes job creation and a firm stand against all forms of corruption, including smuggling. As the President says, “Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap.”

The timing could not have been better. Global demand is growing and the Philippines has an advantage. We can offer our underutilized assembly plants to serve both domestic and regional export needs. We have a growing domestic market with over 90 million car-loving Filipinos—with much room to expand, for both assemblers and distributors alike.

Asia is the auto market with the greatest potential. It is already the biggest—and the most profitable market in the world.

We have the capacity. We have the capability. We have the skills and engineering knowhow. And now, we have the right environment.

With the President’s clear direction of making the Philippines a predictable and consistent place for investments, things will only get better from here on. For the economy, for our workers, for the auto industry.

HOPE can finally be realized.

It is against this backdrop that we celebrate the 3rd Philippine International Motor Show, with our theme, "DRIVE THE GREEN ROAD. "

We aim to use the motor show as a platform to build an eco-driven community. Here, you will find exciting new models, the latest in green technology, alternative solutions to include electric vehicles, hybrids, clean-burning diesel-powered vehicles, as well as advanced fuel-efficient gas engines. Expect 20 global auto brands under one roof, with more than 100 vehicles on display.

This is more than just an exhibit of cars. It represents the nation's pride and joy of economic cloud and achievement.

With God's blessings, we are now on our 3rd year, putting together the country's very own Philippine International Motor Show - one which we, all Filipinos, can be proud of.

Thank you, and to God be the glory!

Bianca Valerio supports PeTA

A few days ago I created a post about Vegetarian Celebrity Bianca Valerio.

I just came from the launch of One Naturales by Charade held at the swimming poolside of A. Venue suites organized by Chris Cahilig Consultancy wherein exceptionally fashionable Bianca Valerio is one of the lovely host.

Charade Galang, the woman behind ONE Naturales stands for organic, natural and eco-friendly lifestyle.

Her products are really something to look forward because they are:

  • non plastic

  • recyclable

  • not expensive

  • planet earth friendly

  • cruelty free

Speaking of cruelty free, Bianca Valerio said in the event that she is a supporter of PeTA , so she would definitely like these products. The moment I saw Bianca I thought of her as a flower, She was in a red floral dress that night and she was really a lovely host. In fact she was able to remove Charade's nervousness. Bianca is a good example to everybody , she is a pesco-vegetarian and she lives a cruelty-free lifestyle. She is a good influence like her best friends in the industry, Isabel Roces (lacto-ovo), Raya Mananquil(vegan) and Val de los Santos (pesco)

Here are some photos of her during the event, Hope she likes it :-)

ONE Naturales by Charade

In pursuit of natural beauty

Products that promise quick-fix beauty solutions bombard us everyday. Everywhere we look—from billboards to magazines, television to radio. Some of them do fulfill their promise, but at such a high cost. Some of them, too, are really quite affordable, but sadly don’t deliver the benefits that they claim.

So how do we discern the one that will work best for us without us having to spend a month’s salary on? For pharmacist and entrepreneur Charade Galang, it’s all about going back to the basics of personal care, opting for natural solutions without the compromises—whether it comes to the benefits they give or their price.

“Many believe that being beautiful requires a lot of effort and money, but then many also aspire to be beautiful without wanting to compromise both quality and affordability,” says the trained chemist, who has successfully met the challenge of uniting the dichotomy between the prevailing mindset and what we really want through ONE Naturales, an exclusive brand of Watson’s.

[gallery orderby="rand"]

ONE stands for organic, natural and eco-friendly and ONE Naturales consists of personal care and beauty products made using natural ingredients presented in formulations to deliver optimal results. “We created the products using the best combinations of naturally sourced ingredients and organic extracts, exudates, purees and essential oils at high levels, not just a hint or a drop just for the sake of claiming that they contain them,” says Charade.

There are beauty companies, after all, that charge such a high price for products that either scrimp on essential ingredients or add unnecessary ones just for, as Charade says, “claiming.” “To be able to operate well, they tend to charge their bloated marketing expenses for advertising and media campaign to the end consumer. This would eventually affect their formulations since they would be limiting their budget on the cost of goods, and result to the use of more stable, volume-dictated cost, readily available, more aesthetically sourced ingredients that are more costly, hard to predict in color and state due to seasonal harvesting and other climactic changes,” she explains.

Our skin, being the largest organ in our body is our protection from external harmful agents, Charade adds, so it needs to be nourished well to be able to provide the optimal efficiency in accomplishing its purpose. “Exposing our skin to products that have conscious efforts to reduce chemical agents would retard skin aging, discoloration and stress-related problems.

This is why we formulated ONE Naturales using high amounts of natural and organic ingredients that act as both the main base and active ingredients. They bombard the skin with nourishment since all the extracts and natural oils used have high affinity to the skin and with continued use, would be just like feeding the skin more food than junk,” she says.

Charade, after all, knows the composition of formulations as well as the ingredients that actually work by heart. She just doesn’t have the educational background to back it up, but years of experience to speak of. Unbeknownst to many perhaps, she is actually behind Glorious Skin, a line of best-selling soaps that she herself not only formulated and produced, but actually used as well. “People would always comment on how good my skin is, so they would start trying my products on themselves and would be greatly satisfied with the benefits they give at such an affordable price,” Charade says.

That first foray into personal care while she was still employed in a top international fashion retail chain eventually led her to leave her job and start ONE Naturales. But even as her business grew, Charade still maintains the same quality control that she has applied when she was first starting out. “All ONE Naturales soaps are meticulously made by hand, while the other products are manufactured using the same standards in the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for manufacturing facilities implemented by government regulatory agencies worldwide,” she explains.

They are made in a highly regulated GMP-compliant, first class facility in China, which is also manufacturing for global brands from Western countries. The material sources used in ONE Naturales products, meanwhile, are carefully selected and procured from different countries worldwide where the specific ingredients are endemic to the place and passed the international standards and parameters for acceptance. They are cultivated and harvested yielding the highest concentrations. “ONE Naturales products have the least possible chemical agents that are skin-friendly and appropriately used to maintain their quality during the entirety of their shelf life.

These chemicals have been declared acceptable by global regulatory agencies for their safety and applicability for prolonged use and frequent exposure. They also don’t accumulate or create skin deposits that would consequently turn into a health hazard,” Charade explains. ONE Naturales’ current product range includes body soaps, solid shampoos, moisturizers, skin bar conditioners, body butter, lip butter balms, hair conditioners, and lotion massage bars. And just as important as the beauty and wellness benefits one gets from using ONE Naturales products is the good it gives back to the environment.

“The use of naturally sourced ingredients not only helps us rid of the toxins, but also improves our environment because there will be less toxins to flush in our baths. Likewise, all ONE Naturales packaging are made from recyclable tin cans and recycled paper,” she concludes.

Benefits of drinking Fresh Buko Juice

I had so much food yesterday so I decided to eat by 12 noon today. Though breakfast is the most important meal I often don't do it. To break my fast I make sure to drink Fresh Buko Juice, by doing this helps clean the intestines and re-hydrates the body system.

Every time I do this I would request for a Fresh Malauhog Buko Juice, then I would make it cold.

Fresh Buko Juice is recommended to drink when you are fasting.

The good side of Fresh Buko Juice:

  • refreshing and re-hydrating

  • treats urethral stones and kidney

  • acts as blood plasma substitute

  • electrolytic

  • good source of potassium

  • naturally organic

  • vegetarian friendly, it's tropical.

Yoga Lunch

A few days ago I was surprised that my UPOU schoolmate Jason is now an active member of the Yoga club. He is starting to practice the Yoga lifestyle and he's a neophyte vegetarian.

He invited me to attend Yoga Lunch at Makati Bel-Air this afternoon. First we did yoga asanas and then we had a class on vegetarianism, cooking demo , we had lunch which is purely vegetarian and there was a lecture about Yoga from a bonafide guest speaker.

We learned so much about Yoga. There is something beyond it, which not all people knew.

Yoga is not about exercise but the science of our identity, it explains relationship among people, why people are angry, why they are envious, why I am like this, etc.

It is something that we can do internally that even we encounter problems we will be able to manage it. One way of applying Yoga Lifestyle is through diet. Becoming vegetarian helps in practicing Yoga. I would like to share things that I learned during the lunch.

How to become vegetarian ?

There are four general reasons why people go vegetarian.

1. Health , those people who would like to become slim.

2. Environment, it's a fact that being vegetarian is the best way to contribute to Mother Earth.

3. Ethics/Morals , there are people who acknowledge that animals also feel the same way, just like you and I , they don't want to get hurt.

They feel pain.

4. Religious, some are obliged because meat eating is not allowed in their religion.

Tips on how to succeed in becoming vegetarian.

1. Have a strong determination

2. Some people tend to give up becoming vegetarian because they are not determined.

3. It takes months, years to become vegetarian, so don't rush. Take it real slow.

4. Survival 101 if you are in a military academy : Rice, Toyo, Peanuts, Dingdong, Nesvita.

5. Most people are allergic to Eggs and Seafoods, shifting to plant based diet is a better choice.

Why vegetarianism is Environmental ?

Livestock farming is the largest contributor of environmental degradation in the whole world.

Raising Animals for food can cause:

  • deforestation

  • air and water pollution

  • land degradation

  • loss of topsoil

  • climate change

  • the overuse of resources including oil and water

  • loss of biodiversity

There's so much about Yoga, it includes discipline, ethics, developing one's well being. It is not about exercise alone.

Halal and Haram

Have you ever noticed of those products or merchandise with the seal of Halal ?

Halal certification is a certificate of compliance of the religious requirement observed by all Muslims worldwide. It is now accepted scientifically that a Halal certificate is a guarantee of genuineness, best quality, wholesomeness, cleanliness, and best fit for human consumption.

Just a few days ago I became curious about it, coincidentally this is being discussed on my STS subject
( Science, Technology and Society )

So I went to UP Islamic Studies to look for a book about Halal, coincidentally there's student who helped me out, She nicely accommodated my inquiries about Halal.

Robin , a muslim student enlightened me so much of what Halal is all about.

Basically here in the Philippines Halal is mostly observed in food and consumables, but Robin said that Halal covers several things like culture.

If there is Halal ( permitted ) , there is Haram ( prohibited ), Robin is very particular about this , she said it's something that is basically observed everyday not only on food but also in behavior and lifestyle. Like being alcoholic , she never tasted any alcoholic beverage since birth because it is prohibited. She lives a lifestyle which is according to the teachings of Quran: no intoxication, observes ethical treatment and aims to help others.

From that day I learned that there is something beyond that seal. That living the lifestyle that develops your faith gives you better understanding about the things happening around you. Living on your choice of faith gives you the way you would want freedom.

fasting diet

A few days ago I had a half day fasting. But this time around I had a whole.

I will start my whole story 2 days ago, when I had my first whole day fasting diet for 2010. Some people fast in order to lose weight but I did it for cleansing the system, to get rid of toxins. I started not eating any single solid food from 8 pm of August 10 until 8 pm of August 11. But before I did that, my friend Abraham treated me to an eat all you can Mongolian Kublai Khan restaurant at Magallanes.  After that I decided to go on a whole day fasting. Then I started working.

The next day, when I was at the Greenwich Bigatin event at SM Megamall, my blogger friends were asking. "So, what are you eating ?" "There's nothing you can eat here." I said " It's Ok, I'll be fine." ( I didn't actually told them I'm on a fast )

The fact that I went vegetarian and I do fasting means I can control my sense of taste. I don't crave whenever I'm in an event and there's no vegetarian option. I am not over acting when I don't eat during events that I do cover, it's just I stick to the principles and lifestyle that I choose to live. And doing a whole day fast is just a regular fast that some people also do. Not so hard to practice, besides it has good effect on our body.

Here are the kinds of fasting ;

The Regular Fast : No food, but sufficient water to quench the thirst to dilute the pathogenic materials and thereby facilitate elimination through the skin and kidneys.

The Dry Fast : This means total abstinence from food and drink. It is a powerful method for promoting elimination of morbid matter and disease taints.

The Seven Day Fast : Cannot produce any harmful or weakening results.

The Long Fast : Extends from one to seven or more weeks, according to individual indications and the vitality of the patient.

source: http://www.healthandyoga.com/html/fasting/chooseyourfast.html

After my fast I drank malauhog buko juice.

Tips:

  • when breaking a fast , don't eat solid foods immediately , it might culture shock your stomach.

  • begin eating fruits and leafy veggies in order to gradually condition your stomach.

  • drinking fresh buko juice cures urine tarck infections.

  • fasting aids ulcer

  • rehydrates

  • it's tonic drink

  • kills intestinal worms

Next time I'll write about benefits of drinking buko juice.

Vegetarian Celebrities : Bianca Valerio

A few days ago I posted about Vegetarian Celebrity Alicia Mayer

A few days after I am so honored because supermodel Bianca Valerio added me on multiply, from then I learned that she is a pesco-vegetarian, therefore she deserves to be included in sexiest vegetarian celebrities. I've seen Bianca down on the runway a lot of times already, she's really sexy and I admit that I'm one of those many people who likes her. I've also seen her a lot of times hosting events, she's really pretty and charming. I admit that I've got a crush on her. Anyway I asked her a lot about her being vegetarian. She was so nice to answer me, thanks Bianca !
I'm a Pescotarian so I still eat seafood but no meat, whatsoever. Well, I figured, if Jesus fed the people fish, then that means I can, too, right? Haha! :-)

How long have you been vegetarian/vegan? why did you become vegetarian?
I've been pesco since March 13,2007. It all started when my boyfriend, Mikee Carrion decided he'd give up meat for Lent. Now since eating was and still is, our thing, I was pissed! After a few days, I decided, fine, I'll try it out too. Ironically, I've never turned back since then while he eventually returned to being a meat-eater.

Is it difficult to be veg? what makes it difficult?
Not at all! It's like quitting smoking, it's all in the mind. It's all or nothing. You just have to want it for yourself. I think the only thing that makes it difficult is that it's not readily available (veg meat and products) in the market. Then if it is, it's really expensive. Being VEG in our country is actually a luxury-lifestyle. Strange since veggies are actually way cheaper than meat. That's why I loved it when I was living in LA last year, studying at Make-Up Designory. Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and pretty much all groceries have a big veggie meat section of everything under the sun! Although more expensive, it was worth every cent!

What changes did you notice in you when you became veg?
Well, more people find me boring, haha! The thing is, being Pesco, is not really the issue. It's not about eating meat for most people as they've gotten used to me being that way, especially since they know I'm a model. The thing is, I am OBSSESSED with healthy food and healthy living!
I was a chain smoker, junk-eating, bad habit type of person years ago. I gave up vices before I became veg but ultimately became engrossed in healthy living when I turned pesco. I never go to work without making baon my own food. They're all either steamed, grilled, organic and so on. I portion everything strictly and really watch everything I eat. It's not a punishment: I honestly enjoy it tremendously! Every healthy meal and snack to me is an ecstatic experience!
I never thought I'd become such a person. But ultimately, I love who I am now and the healthy lifestyle I'm living. I really do feel amazing inside and out because I know I'm really taking care of myself as a whole.
Since then, my skin has never been so healthy-looking. People think that going veg is a way to a sexier body. Hell no! If you're constatantly eating sugars, bad carbs and fried at that, then you're not a healthy veg. You're just veg, in my opinion. There's a thin line.
I've also been more energetic and I just feel lighter in general, physically and mentally.

What is the usual reaction of people who just knew you’re veg?
- Like I said, people always question why but they understand because of my profession. By my profession is just one tiny reason why I love eating healthy. I just love life and intend to live a long, prosperous one in health, love and laughter. So healthy eating by going pesco is a commitment I have to myself :-)
My best friends in the industry, Isabel Roces (lacto-ovo), Raya Mananquil (vegan) and Val de los Santos (pesco) are so happy for me because now we never have problems of deciding where to eat just to be considerate to the so-called meat-eater. Hunting for great veg foods is such a babaw joy!

How did you get into animal rights advocacy?
Isabel Roces and Raya Mananquil are members of PETA and it all started when I signed the NO TO FOIE GRAS appeal, then I hosted an event for LUSH (toiletries and cosmetics), which highly supports PETA and all its efforts. So from there, the rest, as they say, is history...

Did you volunteer in any organization?
No I haven't but on my own, I do my contributions by spreading the word on the pros and cons of going veg. I just try to live by example for others to see and that's what's important.

Where do you get your food?
Healthy Options, Salcedo Market, Bodhi and Shopwise

Halal certified food

What does it take for a consumable product to become a Halal certified food ?

What does Halal means ?

According to Wikipedia, Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted. The term is also used to designate food seen as permissible according to Islamic law (Sharia, الشريعة الإسلامية).

Here in the Philippines Halal Certified Products includes beef and chicken, but not pork. I had a muslim friend , she said pork is not considered Halal because it is not humanely slaughtered.

  • The Quran teaches that God is extremely displeased with those who prohibit anything that was not specifically prohibited in the Quran

"He only prohibits for you the eating of animals that die
of themselves (without human interference), blood, the
meat of pigs, and animals dedicated to other than GOD. If
one is forced (to eat these), without being malicious or
deliberate, he incurs no sin. GOD is Forgiver, Most
Merciful."
2:173

  • animals killed in the name of Allah is permissable. It is Halal

So what does it take for a food to be considered a Halal certified product ?

Beef, chicken and fish.

Well, anything lawful. I think that the real essence of the Halal certified products seal is to to designate food seen as permissible according to Islamic law.

Here in the Philippines there is a site created for the listing of Halal Certified Foods.

Get updated on Halal certified food and products in Facebook by checking out their facebook page

What do Vegans eat ?

I realized so many things today, I don’t know where to start. A few days ago I posted about Real Leaf Green Tea

But last night, I asked Evan, my vegan friend about his input on this drink, He said he is not a fan of this because it has too much sugar , therefore it’s not good for the health. I think that there is nothing wrong ,Because it has natural honey.

The question, Is honey an acceptable food for vegetarians? (Dr. Tam Mateo, the Philippines first Naturopathic Doctor would say yes, after all, he’s a vegan and he uses honey too… although other Vegans would disagree, vociferously in fact…). I am still trying to decide whether it is, but what I am certain is that if it provides the nutritional values in a sweet healthy package, I’m all for it.

Again vegan avoids consuming all foods of animal origin, including eggs, dairy, gelatin and honey. Also refrains from wearing animal products, such as leather shoes or wool and silk clothes.

While a lacto-vegetarian like me will eat dairy products but not eggs and an ovo-vegetarian will eat eggs and dairy.

Vegans must watch out for foods which contain animal substances. Below is a list of things vegans should look out for:

  • albumen/albumin: egg white. Use/s: food binder

  • alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs): naturally occurring chemicals derived from fruit or milk. Use/s: cosmetics

  • ambergris: morbid concretion obtained from the intestine of the sperm whale. Use/s: perfumes

  • amniotic fluid: fluid surrounding the foetus within the placenta. Use/s: cosmetics

  • anchovy: small fish of the herring family. Often an ingredient of Worcester sauce and pizza toppings. Use/s: flavor enhancer

  • angora: fiber obtained from rabbits or goats. Use/s: clothing

  • aspic: jelly derived from meat and fish. Use/s: glazing agent

  • astrakhan: skin of still born or very young lambs from a breed originating in Astrakhan, Russia. Use/s: clothing

  • bristle: stiff animal hair, usually from pigs. Use/s: brushes

  • casein: Ammonium Caseinate. Calcium Caseinate. Potassium Caseinate. Sodium Caseinate. The principle protein of cow's milk. Use/s: texturizer for ice cream, frozen custard, ice milk, fruit sherbets, and in special diet preparations.

  • cashmere: fine wool from the cashmere goat and wild goat of Tibet. Use/s: clothing

  • castoreum: obtained from the sex gland of the . Use/s: fixative in perfumes

  • catgut: dried and twisted intestines of the sheep or horse. Use/s: stringed musical instruments, surgical stitching

  • caviar: roe of the sturgeon and other fish. Use/s: a relish

  • chitin: organic base of the hard parts of insects and crustacea eg shrimps, crabs. Use/s: conditioners and skin care products, thickener and moisturiser in shampoos

  • chamois: soft leather from the skin of the chamois antelope, sheep, goats, deer, etc. Use/s: cleaning cloth

  • cochineal (E120): dye-stuff consisting of the dried bodies of scale insects. Use/s: red food and drink colouring

  • cod liver oil: oil extracted from the liver of cod and related fish. Use/s: food supplement

  • D3 (cholecalciferol): vitamin derived from lanolin or fish oil. Use/s: vitamin and food supplements

  • down: underplummage of fowls (especially duck and goose). Use/s: filling quilts, pillows, sleeping bags, padded clothing

  • eider down: small, soft feathers from the breast of the eider duck. Use/s: filling quilts

  • elastin: protein uniting muscle fibres in meat. Use/s: moisturiser in cosmetics

  • gelatin: jelly obtained by boiling animal tissues (skin, tendons, ligaments etc) or bones. Use/s: confectionery, biscuits, capsules, jellies, photographic film, match heads

  • glycerin/glycerol (E422): clear, colourless liquid which may be derived from animal fats, synthesised from propylene or from fermentation of sugars. Use/s: solvent for flavours, texture improver, humectant

Be Nice to Bunnies

A few days ago I made a post about rabbits, Actually it was about the significance of rabbits to  Romina's life.

A few minutes ago I found on facebook this PeTA ad of Stephanie Pratt telling us to Be Nice to Bunnies.

From now on I will be nice to bunnies and to Stephanie Pratt.

Fasting

Fasting is primarily the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. A fast may be full  (24 hrs.) or partial (12 hrs.). Being a vegetarian is considered  fasting already, because in a way, it's avoiding the intake of all food which are available.

I did not eat since 12 midnight , and then 10 am this morning my gf asked me to eat , I said no because 2 hours from now, it will be considered a half day fast. And ideally fasting is good because it cleanses the stomach and detoxifies our system. I did this a lot of times already and I can see that the results are good, because aside from the cleansing factor, it also develops control and discipline.

Supposedly I can already eat at 12 noon , but instead of eating a full meal right ahead, I just had a buko juice.

My reason is if I'm going to eat a full meal right ahead it will shock my stomach since I just came from fasting. I should take it slow, By having only a buko juice to break from fasting, it gradually conditions your stomach to take solid food again like eating a full meal. Here are the benefits of fasting :

  • It maximizes our body 's self healing capacity.

  • Breaking of fat stored in the body.

  • Helps in eliminating or neutralizing toxins.

  • When food is no longer entering the body, the body turns to fat reserves for energy.

Crispy Kangkong

I would like to thank Ate Nimfa Chua for treating me Garlic Rice, Crispy Kangkong and Buko Juice at Mang Inasal Tomas Morato today.

After covering the Playboy event at San Juan, we hitched on TV 5's crew van going to our way home. But before going home we went first at Tomas Morato to eat out.

Upon learning my order, she asked me a few questions:
Yan lang kakainin mo ?

Mabubusog ka na ba dyan ?

Bakit di mo kinain yung mayonnaise ?

Naisip mo bang ahitin ang balahibo mo sa braso ?

My answer to her ? YES to all.

Rabbits don't really like carrots, only Bugs Bunny

As far as I know rabbits are vegetarians because they do eat carrots. Actually I like Bugs Bunny as a vegetarian icon because he eats carrot and says " What's up doc ? " But I just learned from my friend Romina that If you always feed carrots to rabbits , they will die. She is a rabbit owner and according to her rabbits are not meant to be fed by carrots, but by rabbit food, fresh fruits and vegetables every day. She feeds her rabbits with bananas. She also said that I should have a rabbit pet  because it's a perfect pet for vegetarians. I also learned that her ex-boyfie works for the company that has a rabbit logo.

I think that rabbits are very significant to Romina's life because:

  • her ex-boyfie works for Playboy

  • maybe her pet Suzy reminds her of the company logo where her ex-boyfie works for

Reasons why always feeding carrots is bad for rabbits:

  • Carrots are high in sugar, rabbits are already sweet by nature.

  • It may upset their stomachs and would cause diarrhea.

  • Carrots everyday is a torture to them.

It was nice to meet Romina again , As we were chatting she told me that her father is also a lacto-vegetarian. For 30 years her Dad is living the vegetarian lifestyle at the same time playing archery, biking, and doing outdoor activitites. She has a cool Dad, I told her that I would want to meet her Dad and  I am going to feature him here. Watch out for it. Romina admits that she can't be a vegetarian because she loves bacon and her boyfie is a meat eater. I hope that someday she can turn to her Dad's diet.

Seva Yoga for Service

In Yoga philosophy, the virtue of generosity reminds everyone that all beings live from the donations of others, as the world, family, and that we are all connected. The action of giving back is a sincere sharing of wealth (money, talents, service) acquired by right means, and it is counted among the ten niyamas (the code of conduct) on the Yoga path. Service (called “seva” in Sanskrit) is something necessary for everyone’s continued development. Community is nurtured through voluntary gatherings for service together, where teachers and students can connect with each other while, at the same time, doing something that makes the world a better place.

The ECHOyoga Community Center is focused on bringing yoga closer to the general public through classes created for absolute beginners (or the stressed, injured, and heavy-set). A new dimension of yoga is being offered starting this August—that of further deepening community spirit and learning more of the other aspects of Yoga, beyond asana postures.

ECHOyoga’s Thursday classes at 6:30 p.m. will be offered for this purpose. The first and third Thursdays of the month are Seva (Service) Nights, where yoga classes are connected to charity and healing for the benefit of sexually abused young girls from CRIBS Foundation. These classes can include asanas, yoga nidra healing, pranayama (breath manipulation), techniques for asanas, Sanskrit chanting, Yogic philosophy, and discussions from the Yoga sutras. Teachers offer their services for free, and students can donate any amount they wish. No student will be turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds of this class will go to building a revolving logistics fund to bring sexually abused young girls (ages 9 to 16 years old) from the CRIBS Foundation to the ECHOyoga Community Center for Saturday afternoon healing yoga classes.

The second Thursdays of the month are for Breath and Meditation, a class that is open to people who may not even be yoga practitioners, but wish to learn basic meditation techniques, healing visualization, and pranayama. This class explores inner subtle states for deeper knowledge of one’s Self. Deepening Focus, a class open for all levels, will be offered on the last Thursday of the month. Individualized instruction will be adopted for the student’s needs to explore asanas (postures) within their level.

Regular classes include Gentle Flow, Yoga for Big People, Restorative Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, and Led Ashtanga. Visit echoyoga.echostore.ph for schedules, class descriptions, and fee details. ECHOyoga Community Center is at the Penthouse of Century Plaza, 120 Perea Street, Legaspi Village, Makati City. For details and reservations, call or text 0906-5063958, or e-mail echoyogaworkshop@gmail.com.
