Vegetarian Jokes

Being Vegetarian is a serious move, but at the same time not. My lifestyle is fun and lively.
There's a lot of things you'll discover in a Vegetarian Lifestyle. The more you eat veggies , the more you create juices.

I will share a story.
One night, I'm done jogging along U.P. Oval, ( my favorite place in U.P.) I decided to check if Ate Marge still has something veg for dinner. ( Ate Marge sells vegetarian food in U.P. campus along Ipil residence )
I was lucky , there was tokwa and spring beans, and so that was my meal for dinner.
While eating, someone sat in front of me,......... after few minutes he asked :
" Vegetarian po kayo ?"
I sometimes do this out of observing people's reaction I said :

" Uhm , Hindi .........Ano ba yung vegetarian ? "
He said :
" Uhm, yung hindi kumakain ng kahit anong may mukha , ....gulay lang talaga "
So I asked him :
" Aw, bakit mo naman natanong kung vegetarian ako ? "
he said :
" Kasi , puro gulay lang inorder mo, tapos tinanong mo pa kung may halo ba yung baguio beans. Vegetarian kasi kami dahil Adventist convert ang parents ko, hindi kami kumakain ng kahit anong may mukha " ( but he was eating fish that time )
I replied :
" Aw ganun ba, so hindi ako vegetarian kasi kumakain ako ng kalabasa eh ",.......hehehe

I would like to share this from vegetus.org

The Inevitable Vegetarian Sex Jokes
Allison
True Story: I was at a wedding recently, and as usual passing up the meat, and asking for more potatoes, when I received the inevitable question: "so, where do you get your protein...?" to which my date announced to the entire table without batting an eye, "she swallows!" I was not interrogated about my vegetarianism from that moment forward!

What do you call a vegan guy who likes to pleasure himself?
A non-dairy creamer.
Etan W.
A young vegan couple decided to spice up their life so they bought "The Joy of Sex." A friend later asked them if the book had helped. Disgusted, the lady replied, "We didn't know what we were getting into. That book goes against everything we believe." The friend, a bit surprised, asked them if they were against free sexual expression. "No," said the man, "but you wouldn't believe what they want us to put in our mouths!"

There was a vegan and her husband wanted head. She said that she didn't eat weiners. [Unless her husband was vegan too....]
Mertle
Why do vegans give good head?
Because they are used to eating nuts.
Kendle
I may be vegan but I still eat pussy.

Why are all lesbians vegetarian?
Because they don't eat meat.

Kalsada Grill and Inasal : not vegetarian friendly

Kalsada is a nice place to hang and chill out.
It has nice atmosphere, Interiors are well designed, and there's a lot of beautiful girls.
The place is classical, I can say that it is homey.
They do have nice food, in fact they have vegetarian options like tokwa, mojo potatoes and sizzling mushrooms. Although they have some vegetarian options I personally don't consider them as vegetarian friendly.
In fastfoods like Chowking, you can request to customize their pansit ( you can tell the cook to make it vegetarian ). You can also do that here in Kalsada ( you can tell the server to make it vegetarian ) but I doubt it, because they won't make it vegetarian. I've tried it once, I requested to cook it vegetarian, but they still served the wrong one. How shameful ! Kalsada is a nice place but not vegetarian friendly.
Kalsada Grill and Inasal is located at Dona Soledad Ave. Paranaque, PH

Thanks to VegCooking.com : Recipe of the Week

for this one yummy email recipe. I confess that I am a tofu lover, and this is a must for us vegetarians - Powered by Tofu.

Garlic-Ginger Tofu Stir-Fry
This mouthwatering Chinese dish is a must-have!
1 small Thai pepper, minced
1 tsp. minced ginger
1 garlic clove, minced
1 Tbsp. olive oil
3 Tbsp. soy sauce
1/4 cup water
1 Tbsp. arrowroot powder or cornstarch
2 Tbsp. vegetable oil

1 tsp. soy sauce
2 carrots, cut into 2-inch strips
1 red pepper, sliced
1 large bok choy (or 4-5 baby bok choy), cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1/2 medium onion, sliced
1/2 cup yellow squash, sliced into 1/2-inch-thick pieces

Cooked lo mein or soba noodles

  • Sauté the minced pepper, ginger, and garlic in the olive oil for 2 to 3 minutes over medium heat. Add the soy sauce and water, stirring until well combined. Stir in the cornstarch and simmer over low heat until the tofu and vegetables are ready.

  • Add the carrots, red pepper, bok choy, onions, and squash to the skillet and stir-fry until the vegetables are tender but crisp, about 3 minutes. Add the prepared sauce and tofu and stir-fry until all the ingredients are coated and heated, about 2 minutes.

  • Serve immediately over the lo mein or soba noodles.

10 Most Common Questions to a Vegan and Vegetarian

A few days ago , I shared the questions and answers of Nancy Siy about her becoming a vegan, the way she does veganism is not a joke. It is a serious move that involves life principles and a matter of choice. Here's another common questions to vegetarians/vegan and her answers as I interviewed her via facebook.

Actually this was also shared before by my vegan friend Rhea Manuel
10 Most Common Questions (and answers) people who first find out I’m vegan ask me:
1. So you eat fish?
Of course not. Fish are animals too.

2. What do you eat?
Vegetables, legumes, grains, fruits.

3. Where do you get your protein?
Soy products, nuts, etc.

4. Where do you get that discipline?
It does not require any discipline. Does it require discipline for a "meat-eater" not to eat a monkey or a horse?

5. Don't you miss meat?
No. Meat is disgusting.

6. What's the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan?
A vegan subscribes to the whole philosophy of abstaining from any animal use in as much as it is possible. This extends to clothing choices, bathroom product purchases, entertainment choices, etc on top of the normally associated food intake.

7. What made you turn vegan?
Realizing that my choice to eat meat harmed others- the animals, the environment, the hungry people in other parts of the world.

8. So you don't eat junkfood or drink softdrinks?
I still eat junk food like potato chips but not as often anymore. There's so much better food to eat than junk. I drink softdrinks from time to time, that's only because I like the taste of rootbeer. I do not drink any Coca Cola products because Coke has many human rights violations. Check out killercoke.org for more information.

9. (In a restaurant, upon receiving their plates with meat dishes) Sorry, is it okay if we eat meat in front of you?
It depends on the situation. Sometimes I would say "I prefer that you do not, but I cannot control your choices" or "I would appreciate it if you do not". If they already have their "food" in front of them, it is kind of pointless. But if they ask before their order, I would definitely encourage them to try the non-animal food items.

10. How is vegan spelled?
Is this a joke? V-e-g-a-n.

Thanks to Vegan Nancy Siy for this.

World’s Sexiest Vegetarian Alicia Mayer

Just recently, I met one of the World’s Sexiest Vegetarian Alicia Mayer during the presscon of TV 5’s Inday Wanda, I admit that she still looks sexy after giving birth to a healthy young boy last September 29, 2008.
I asked her “Alice, Are you vegan or vegetarian?” she said “not anymore, I eat fish and other seafoods”, ( pesco veg) Surprisingly I thought that she turned into meat eating again, but not.
She didn’t eat on the set because there was no veg food in the presscon, but she said she just had her breakfast that’s why.
In the Philippine Entertainment History Alicia is the former girlfriend of Joey Marquez and Edu Manzano.

There were write ups that Alicia Mayer will no longer pose sexy for PeTA, which she decided a few years ago for her baby and her family.
But she still considers a vegetarian diet as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Watch out for her doing a villain role as “Akit” in Tv5 ‘s Inday Wanda soon this September.

To be a vegetarian is getting sweeter these days!

Someone says Coca-cola and what comes to your mind? Sugar, soda, and all those things doctors and nutritionists say are bad for you. So, you can imagine what a pleasant surprise it was to learn that Coca-cola now has a product that is truly healthy!

I was skeptical, at first. After all, anything with sugar in it can’t be good, can it? But this time, the company that creates the greatest carbonated drink in the world, also matched that record with the healthiest tea drink in the world! It’s the Real leaf Green Tea, using natural green tea leaves with real natural honey. Yup, you read it right, honey. Sweet golden honey is where they get that natural sweet taste, and what can be more nutritious than honey?

It does put me in a bind, because now, I’m trying to decide whether I am still being faithful to my being a vegetarian. Is honey an acceptable food for vegetarians? (Dr. Tam Mateo, the Philippines first Naturopathic Doctor would say yes, after all, he’s a vegan and he uses honey too… although other Vegans would disagree, vociferously in fact…). I am still trying to decide whether it is, but what I am certain is that if it provides the nutritional values in a sweet healthy package, I’m all for it. Come to think about it, since I am a lacto-vegetarian (which means I permit dairy and other animal produce (excepting meat) in my diet), I suppose it should not bother me too much… hehehehe…

What is important to me is that this drink helps me keep perky (the theanine in the tea, and the natural sugar in honey conspire to keep the brain entertained and focused), and helps me sustain my energy levels throughout the day. What else can we expect from a concoction that is derived from the finest tea leaves from Zhejiang region of China, the world’s tea capital? It is because of this quality in this particular tea drink that keeps me going in my work, studies, and hobby (and lets me maintain my sexy looks, as proof of which I attach here a sincerely egotistic and narcissistic photo of myself rising like a male Venus from the cool waters, hahahaha… let viewers beware, drooling and envy is a noted side effect… hehehehee).

And it's impossible to get bored with the drink too, because they have three different combinations! Honey-apple has that apple zest taste, while the honey-lemon has that limey tang. Apple-lychee of course has a different taste altogether, something that can't really be described (well, as one of my literature teacher says, as a writer I have no excuse to run out of words to describe something, so I guess, it might be possible to describe that particular taste… perhaps after taking up 689,000 words and 300 pages of comparative descriptions… )

They said that the test of the pudding is in the eating, so I guess, you’ll just have to try it out for yourselves and see. I have tried the three flavors and decided I can’t describe them enough to satisfy my obsessively OC writer’s mind, so I won’t even try. I’ll just say, I liked it, very much in fact, and encourage you to try it yourself.

Who knows, you might find being a vegetarian quite sweet… with Real Leaf !

Becoming a Vegan

A few months ago I met a girl who just turned vegan. I admire people who decides to go veg because the will to sacrifice to help animals and the environment is a something that is worthless, the best choice and above all it's naturally nonviolence. I salute Nancy for her deeds , she also influences her friends to go veg. She shares her food to her friends to make them feel that veg is a better option. She also likes yoga, which is an ideal veg lifestyle. Because vegetarianism is a yoga lifestyle.

I asked her a few questions on how she became a vegan:

1. How long have you been vegetarian/vegan? why did you become vegetarian?
- I turned vegetarian Nov 2009 and vegan around one month after. When I read "Meet Your Meat" and saw undercover videos of factory farming, it was the first time I became aware of the violence involved in production of meat, dairy, and eggs. I just cannot contribute to that needless violence anymore.

2. Is it difficult to be veg? what makes it difficult?
- It was not difficult at all. It's easier than I expected. I had no cravings. How could I? How appealing is rape and murder for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? If there is anything difficult, it's the people around me who want to challenge my decision and continuously try to find fault with this choice- it's the insensitivity, the ignorance, and lack of information.

3. What changes did you notice in you when you became veg?
- I no longer had digestion problems. Animals come near me more. I feel more at peace. I am happier.

4. What is the usual reaction of people who just knew you're veg?
- Some think it's a good thing but have a bunch of excuses why they can't do it. I am hoping they will reach the point in their lives when they become ready. Others resort to ridicule and refuse to read what I read or see what I saw- they are just unwilling to have the information that may change their lives.

5. How did you get into animal rights advocacy?
- It came naturally. When I decided to be vegan, I thought it would be a personal choice that will end with me. The idea of being an advocate or an activist seemed extreme- but now because I want the world to know what I know, my actions have naturally resembled that of an advocate's and activist's even if it is confined within the circle of people I already know.

6. Did you volunteer in any organization?
- I volunteer for PETA and online for Vegan Pledge. I also join online forums to talk about veganism and provide support whenever possible.

7. What did you do in your organization?
- For PETA, it can be anything from writing letters to stuffing envelopes. For Vegan Pledge, it's a program where you get to become a new vegan's coach to provide moral and practical support. I have yet to have a coachee though.

8. Are all animal rights advocates vegetarians?
- I would like to think so. Actions need to be aligned with values, so if one believes in animal rights, then one has to be vegan. That's the minimum, I think.

9. What are the animal rights group in the philippines that you know?
- CARA, PAWS, PETA. WWF is not an animal rights group- it's a speciesist group founded by hunters so they can preserve a select group of animals. In my eyes, they do not care about animals.

10. Where do you get your food?
- Supermarkets like SM for vegetables and fruits. I also go to Legaspi Sunday market. For treats like ice cream, chocolates etc, I go to Healthy Options.

Vegetarian Lunch in a hospital

A few months ago I posted about Manila Sanitarium now Manila Adventist Medical Center and Colleges

When Typhoon Basyang has ended, I think that it was a nice time to eat at the Manila Adventist Medical Center and Colleges Cafeteria, I will try if it will convince carnivores to eat their vegetarian meal options. First of all majority does not know that there is a veg cafe inside this hospital. In fact my friend said "Huh? we will be having a vegetarian lunch in the hospital, I'm afraid." Aside from this reason , my friend doesn't eat vegetables at all. Plus he has phobia in hospitals. He ended ordering only arrozcaldo for lunch. Arrozcaldo here is veg but has eggs. He liked that one plus he liked the place , it was well designed and elegant. In this cafe they don't serve soft drinks. Unfortunately my friend is a coke light lover

I can say that Manila Adventist Medical Center and Colleges Cafeteria 's food doesn't convince a carnivore to go veg because:

  • Buffet here is not well presented , it doesn't look attractive.

  • Unfriendly personnels, they can't completely explain what the food is made of. ( we have to educate people about veg options )

  • Poor food service

  • There's only few choices on food

  • oftentimes unavailability of some soy drinks such as soy malt

I was not able to convince my friend that vegetarian meal is a nice option but will not give up, I will bring him to other veg restos in Manila like Quan Yin Chay, Happy Veggie and Heavenly Grace. I will be posting updates the moment I get to come back to these vegetarian restaurants.

Definitions of Vegetarians

There's a lot of COMMON QUESTIONS TO VEGETARIANS who first finds out that I'm one of those. But before I proceed, let me share to you Definitions of Vegetarians from The Vegetarian Manifesto by Cheryl Perry, Leslie Lytle and Teresa Jacobs.

Mc Donalds French Fries might be bad for the stomach

There's an issue that Mc Donalds French Fries is not veg friendly because the oil that they used for frying is the used oil of Mc Donalds Fried Chicken. Here in the Philippines, there is no strong proof yet regarding this issue, neither claims or studies from the experts, but if you know anyone pitch a comment here so I can know.  But in Seattle, McDonald's Confirms Its French Fries Are Made With Beef  Extract.

Last night I bought 2 large Mc Donalds French Fries at Mc Donalds Quezon Ave. near ABS-CBN. One for me and one for my gf. One was salted while the other one was not. They were able to serve Mc Donalds French Fries on time. While eating I noticed that the other Mc Donalds French Fries was lapsed already, I still ate it. After eating I suddenly felt a stomach ache. I suspected Mc Donalds French Fries to be the main reason:

  • Maybe because the oil that they used for frying is the used oil of Mc Donalds Fried Chicken

Choosing a vegetarian lifestyle is not only for the "elite"

Choosing a vegetarian lifestyle is not only for the "elite"

The concept of vegetarianism in the Philippines is usually labeled as elitist, but not for me. When I turned
vegetarian, I did not know even know the meaning of “elite.” I actually did not know who they are. All I know is when I turned vegetarian it helped reduce the number of suffering animals for food, protect the environment and improve myself.

When people find out someone is vegetarian, the number one question on most meat-eaters' minds is, "What do you eat?" My straightforward answer would always be “vegetables of course.”

Some people would wonder if I came from a family in the upper crust of society because of understanding that vegetarian food is expensive, and maintaining the lifestyle would be that, expensive. A lot of people, even friends and my own relatives do not really know the meaning of being a vegetarian. Well there is really no “elite” factor with what I am doing.

Here in the Philippines, one of the reasons why the concept of vegetarianism is not that popular compared to
other countries is because of that misconception. If you really think about it, aren’t vegetables cheaper than meat? Plant farming is actually cheaper than livestock farming, since one needs lesser energy in producing plants than raising, slaughtering, and transporting animals.

They say that it is hard to be vegetarian in the Philippines. (this was not developed). During the time of our ancestors, hunting and gathering were the main means of acquiring food. planted crops and hunted animals. This perpetuated the eating of meat. But come to think of it, there the country is rich in farmland, after all, we are an agricultural country. Geographically speaking, our soil is rich and our weather is friendly to plant farming. If we can find ways to maximize the use of this land, then there will be enough cheaper food for everyone and hunger might be eliminated finally. Unfortunately, this is not realized by most people. They still maintain what they were used to eating.

The Philippines is a poor country economically, but not in natural resources which we can tap to feed the hungry masses and provide livelihood for the many. But Filipinos suffer still from the greed of the landlords whose mindset is to supply what is being demanded – animal meat. Instead of spending the money on planting vegetable crops, hog or poultry raising is done. A UN study in a year shows that livestock production is one of the “most significant contributors to today's most serious environmental problems.

Livestock production occupies 70% of all land used for agriculture, or 30% of the land surface of the planet.
It is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases, responsible for 18% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions as measured in CO2 equivalents. It is also “a key factor driving deforestation, in the Amazon basin 70% of previously forested area is now occupied by pastures and the remainder used for feedcrops.

Through deforestation and land degradation, livestock is also driving reductions in biodiversity." UN (2006)
further recommended that animal agriculture "be a major policy focus when dealing with problems of land
degradation, climate change and air pollution, water shortage and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity.”
Choosing a vegetarian lifestyle is not only for the elite. Being vegetarian is actually not going expensive. After
all, it is more costly when a meat eater gets sick in time because of all the toxins in meat that s/he consumed.

To switch to a vegetarian lifestyle is to slowly reduce your risks of getting sick and spending more money on
medication. Being vegetarian is a wise option health-wise and environmental wise.
