Be Smart, Care for your Heart

Based on the latest National Nutrition Survey of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), 1 out of every 3 Filipinos aged 20 and up already has borderline high to high bad cholesterol levels. The study results show that almost 17% of those ages 20-29 yrs. old already have borderline high to high cholesterol levels. The incidence increases amongst those in their 30s and 40s (nearing 26% and 31% respectively) and closely doubles for those in their 50s (48%).

In response to this, FNRI and Del Monte Philippines, Inc. partnered for an advocacy against hypercholesterolemia, a condition characterized by very high levels of cholesterol in the blood, under the banner “Be Smart, Care for Your Heart”. Launched today, the partnership will combine Del Monte’s deep knowledge of consumer behavior and FNRI’s expertise in nutrition to ensure the success of the advocacy. The FNRI is the government’s lead agency in charge of nutrition studies and surveys, the results of which are used by policy-makers.
According to Del Monte’s Category Manager for Beverages Ms. Clars Guerrero, “we recognize the need to raise awareness over the growing threat of high cholesterol in the country. Del Monte being a trusted brand known for quality and nutritious food and beverage products remains true to that commitment in bringing to life health and wellness for the Filipino consumer by partnering with the FNRI against hypercholesterolemia”.
FNRI director Mario Capanzana expressed his appreciation for Del Monte’s concern for the health of all Filipinos explaining “the government needs all the help it can get. This is actually a responsibility that should be shared by each and every Filipino if we really want to succeed in the fight against high blood cholesterol levels and cardiovascular or lifestyle diseases”.
Findings from the World Health Organization and Department of Health state that, coincidentally, 1 out of 3 Filipino deaths is caused by cardiovascular diseases or CVDs—of which the dominant cause is the high concentration of bad cholesterol in the blood.
Presentation from nutritionists and scientists revealed that hypercholesterolemia is a product of many factors including a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet plus a stressful environment. People who are typically exposed to such risks and diseases appear to be getting younger such as professionals who work in call centers, and those who do deskbound jobs.
FNRI and Del Monte will conduct a Cholesterol Awareness Program that seeks to create connections and generate partnerships with the human resource department of various firms and establishments in order to educate their employees who are at risk of developing hypercholesterolemia. Both the FNRI and Del Monte are continuously exploring other ways to further the advocacy and educate consumers. In the meantime, remember that it is never too early to start managing your cholesterol levels. Be Smart and Care for your Heart!
