RENT: under the shadow of HIV/AIDS

First I would like to share what AIDS and HIV is all about?

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. AIDS is a serious condition that weakens the body's immune system, leaving it unable to fight off illness.
AIDS is the last stage in a progression of diseases resulting from a viral infection known as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV or AIDS virus). The diseases include:

  • a number of unusual and severe infections,

  • cancers and debilitating illnesses,

  • resulting in severe weight loss or wasting away,

  • and diseases affecting the brain and central nervous system.

There is no cure for HIV infection or AIDS nor is there a vaccine to prevent HIV infection.

Speaking of AIDS and HIV, there is one musical play a must for AIDS prevention advocates out there - RENT

RENT is the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.

This February, season of love, RENT is set to open this coming Feb. 12 at the RCBC plaza. Gian Magdangal leads the cast as Roger Davis, a songwriter who is HIV positive, with Fred Lo as Mark Cohen, an independent filmmaker and Roger’s roommate and Sheree/Ciara Sotto as Mimi Márquez, an exotic dancer with HIV.

The cast will also feature OJ Mariano as Tom Collins, a gay philosophy professor and anarchist with AIDS; Carla Guevara-Laforteza as Maureen Johnson, a bisexual performance artist; Lawrence as Benjamin ‘Benny’ Coffin III, the local landlord and a former room mate of Roger, Mark, Collins, and Maureen; Job Bautista as Angel Dumott Schunard, a gay drag queen percussionist with AIDS and Jenny Villegas as Joanne Jefferson, a lawyer, who is Maureen’s partner.
