Royal Oasis | Relax, Rejuvenate, Renew | Massage at it's Finest

Rush hour and everything? Stress! That’s why I need a place of peace and relaxation. I must go to a spa.

The problem nowadays is the struggle to hit a perfect therapist that will suit your needs. Someone who really touches the pain and will remove it all the way down. Good thing there is Royal Oasis Commonwealth which not so far from my office.

It only takes less than 10 km from Novelises. My only worry? Traffic! So I need to Relax, Rejuvenate, Renew and have a Massage at its Finest.

Experts estimate that 80 percent to 90 percent of disease is stress-related. Massage and bodywork is there to combat that frightening number by helping us remember what it means to relax. The physical changes massage brings to your body can have a positive effect in many areas of your life. Besides increasing relaxation and decreasing anxiety, massage lowers your blood pressure, increases circulation, improves recovery from injury, helps you to sleep better and can increase your concentration. It reduces fatigue and gives you more energy to handle stressful situations.

Royal Oasis is one of the cleanest places I’ve ever been to, not to mention they have good customer oriented personnel’s that deserves two thumbs up! Very accommodating and makes me feel aahh!! This is like home.

Oh I love the way I'm being treated by the staff. When I got there on my first (and succeeding) visit, a therapist led me to the comfortable washing area where my feet were cleaned with warm water.

I tried their Thai Massage and as I lie on the floor under crisp, fresh sheets, hushed music draws you into the moment. The smell of aroma fills the air and you hear the gentle sound of massage being warmed from the therapist's hands. The pains of age, the throbbing of overstressed muscles, the sheer need to be touched -- all cry out for therapeutic hands to start their work. Once the session gets underway, the problems of the world fade into an oblivious 60+ minutes of relief and all I can comprehend is not wanting it to end.

The next time I visit here. I’m going to try their Swedish. I recommend Royal Oasis to those who are reading my blog. The price is very affordable and you getting more than what you pay for.

Visit them at Unit 1-D GV Square, North Fairview, Commonwealth Ave Extension, 1121 Quezon City, Philippines

Royal Oasis Commonwealth is open from Monday to Sunday,2pm to 2am.

For Reservations, please contact them through 9043099 or 09179426176. or email them at royaloasismassage@gmail.com

We usually get stress from all activities so we must know then the benefits of massage:

- It allows the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs.

- Stimulates the flow of lymph, the body's natural defence system, against toxic invaders. For example, in breast cancer patients, massage has been shown to increase the cells that fight cancer.

- Increased circulation of blood and lymph systems improves the condition of the body's largest organ - the skin.

- Relaxes and softens injured and overused muscles

- Reduces spasms and cramping

- Increases joint flexibility.

- Reduces recovery time, helps prepare for strenuous workouts and eliminates subsequent pains of the athlete at any level.

- Releases endorphins - the body's natural painkiller - and is being used in chronic illness, injury and recovery from surgery to control and relieve pain.

- Reduces post-surgery adhesions and can be used to reduce and realign scar tissue after healing has occurred.

- Improves range-of-motion and decreases discomfort for patients with low back pain.

- Relieves pain for migraine sufferers and decreases the need for medication.

- Provides exercise and stretching for atrophied muscles and reduces shortening of the muscles for those with restricted range of motion.

- Assists with shorter labor for expectant mothers, as well as less need for medication, less depression and anxiety, and shorter hospital stays.

MUSHROOM or MUSHROOM BEEF BURGER?

(CHECKING WHAT YOU EAT)

Are you a vegetarian and a mushroom
lover? You’d better be careful with your mushroom burger!

The MUSHROOM BURGER JOINT, which originated in Tagaytay City, has now branched out in Katipunan, West Avenue, and a stall in Ateneo De Manila University. They offer Mushroom with Beef Burger, Mushroom with Pork Burger, and Mushroom with Chicken Burger. It goes with French fries and drinks of your own choice. I am sure you’ll love the tasty burgers and the delicious French Fries. But if you are a pure vegetarian, a Veggie, it is better for you to
order Mushroom Sandwich because it has no other meat ingredients that veggies tries to avoid.

Don’t be confused with the Mushroom Burger items which were mentioned earlier because
it contains meat and poultry. You might be misled by its name, Mushroom Burger, thinking that it is made of pure mushroom. It was actually a misnomer since the supposed flavor, like beef, chicken and pork was not declared. Its ingredients will only be revealed if you’ll ask the Food Servers. I am sure that the company of Mushroom Burger has no intention of lying or misleading its precious customers.

But if you’re a vegetarian check out the Mushroom Sandwich, it is one of the tastiest if not the best in town.

Eating Like a Rabbit

Do you like the taste of Soyami Soya Chips?

Soyami Soya Chips : An Appetite For Health

There’s a saying that goes, “If the food tastes good, it’s bad for you. If the food tastes bad, it’s actually good for you.”

Healthy eating is proving to be quite a challenge due to the misconception about healthy foods being bland and tasteless. But in reality, eating nutritious food is not that difficult. In fact, it may surprise you to find it delicious.

There‘s a lot of food out there that don’t require any sacrifice and give up your favorite guilty food pleasure altogether. It’s just a matter of snacking smart and finding a better, nutritious alternative to your indulgences.

Take the unassuming soya, for example.
Super Soya
The soya bean is a type of legume just like beans, peas, and peanuts, which can provide twice as much protein as grains. Soybean products include soymilk, tofu, miso, tempeh, soya meal, soya sauce and bean paste among many others.

Soya is a good source of complete protein. A complete protein is one that contains a significant amount of all the essential amino acids needed by the human body for optimum health. Soy protein is the nutritional equivalent of meat, eggs and dairy, and can therefore replace animal-based protein.

Soy has been under the spotlight as a possible “superfood” that can reduce the risk of certain health problems. With an impressive nutrient profile that is high in dietary fiber and protein, cholesterol-free, and an excellent source of phytochemicals and minerals like phosphorus, potassium, calcium and iron, soy is by far, the best and most complete nutritional, beneficial plant food we can all take advantage and put to good use.
Amazingly, there are many types of food that we love which can be made or derived from soy. From ice cream to burgers, milk, breads, butter, cheese, nuts and yes, even chips!
Soyami Soya Chips not only tastes good, but it’s actually good for you, too. Made from 100% naturally grown soya, it is high in protein and fiber. It has no MSG, no trans fat and no added preservatives. No wonder it’s approved and highly recommended by The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition Fitness Nutritionist Chef, Nadine Tengco, as part of the meal plan. “Unlike animal products, soya is low in saturated fat which makes a good source of cholesterol-free and low fat protein. Soyami Soya Chips provides a healthier snack alternative to the contestants.

The Soyami range of snack products contains the right amount of carbohydrates, protein, and fiber, while having reduced amounts of fat and sodium.”
She also adds, “Mindless snacking contributes to the weight gain in most of the contestants. The high protein content of Soyami Soya Chips will significantly reduce the sugar spikes that often occur in high-carb, high-fat snacks. And because Soyami Soya Chips comes in properly portioned packaging, it gives the contestants just the right amount of calories per pack, which would not in any way, compromise them in their quest to lose weight.”
Plus, not only did Soyami Soya Chips pass with flying colors on nutritional and taste tests, she also gave it excellent marks on a snack versatility test, “Aside from just being a stand-alone snack, Soyami Soya Chips can be creatively used in preparing and cooking dishes. For instance, instead of using breadcrumbs, you can use crushed Soyami Soya Chips for that added crunch while increasing protein content of the dish.

You can also crush the chips coarsely and sprinkle on soups and salads as you would on croutons. And you can make nachos healthier with Soyami Soya Chips partnered with your favorite salsa dip.”
Start a good eating habit with Soyami Soya Chips. It’s for your own good!
Soyami Soya Chips is available in three exciting flavors – Original, White Cheddar and Pizza. Visit www.amsoyami.com for more information about soya. Follow us on Twitter http://twitter.com/healthysoyami and like us on Facebook at http://facebook.com/healthysoyami.

Watsons and Unilab partners in stopping the spread of superbugs

After informing the public about the spread of Superbug last June, another set of press briefing was held at The Crowne plaza on Nov. 24 as Unilab and Watsons continues to educate the public about this alarming issue.

During the 33rd Annual Convention of the Philippine Society of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, the main focus to public health was informing about the threat of infectious superbug and more important is how this can be stopped.

Superbugs are antibiotic-resistant bacteria that pose a daily threat to humanity. For better understanding read my last post about Superbug.

Dr. Rontgene Solante, Lyle Joseph A. Morell and Dr. Maria Yvette Barez were present to give updates concerning the threat of Superbug.

"We should not self medicate. It is important that we always consult our doctor when we feel something about our health and do not buy antibiotics on our own, and we are guilty of this." Dr. Rontgene Solante PSMID president.

That is why Watsons launched a campaign to stop the threat of Superbug by means of Compliance Pack, packed in the right quantities that help consumers follow complete antibiotic treatment.

"They are based on the standard clinical practice of physicians, ensuring that patients have enough antibiotics supply" says Lyle Joseph A. Morell head of Business Unit of Watsons.

One of the greatest factor is quality. Make sure that they are from the top ten pharmaceutical company. Therefore you have to trust your doctor because he knows the right price and the right medicine for you.

"Kung ang price ng antibiotic ay piso lang I don't think it has quality" says Dr. Maria Yvette Barez, National Council Officer PSMID.

We should know the right and reputable pharmaceutical company.

In this connection we should be alarmed and know the common practices and misuse of antibiotics.

Do not Self Medicate
This happens when a patient buys antibiotics on his or her own without prior consultation with a doctor. Some of these patients borrow a used prescription; or follow the advice relatives and friends.

Do not skip a dose
Patients who miss a dose or several doses of antibiotic are allowing bacteria to recover from-and develop a resistance - to the antibiotic's effects . There's also a risk of infection resurgence.

Don't stop the use too early
Some patients don't finish the prescribed treatment course of the antibiotics prescribed to them. They stop taking the antibiotics once they feel better. Others are unable to buy all the antibiotics prescribed because they don't have enough money.

Don't use antibiotics like over the counter drugs
Antiobitics are powerful medications that must be used only under a doctor's supervision. Unfortunately, some patients mistakenly believe that antibiotics are used to relieve symptoms like fever, body pain, coughs and colds.

According to stuides 66% of anitobiotics in Manila were sold without a prescription.

This advocacy aims to help make a law about proper prescrition of antibiotics.

Afraid of surgical facial treatment? Try Botox Alternative

Exercise and diet are not enough to keep the wrinkles away.

But with Diana Stalder's Regenerin treatment you no longer have to watch your face on aging.

Now you will look younger, and feel better about your appearance.

Regenerin is Diana Stalder's Botox alternative. So if you're afraid of needles it's the best option.

A few days after the mall tour last Saturday. I had the chance to experience this 1500 Php worth of facial services and wow that's awesome. It feels so good after, very smooth effect on skin.

There is no need for you to wash your face because the first stage of this treatment is cleansing your face with cream and that's gonna remove all the dust and dirt. So it's so relaxing.

The most painful part is pricking because it has pressure and that's going to remove all your white heads including pimples which are about to grow.

But for Robbie (http://thecreativedork.com/) it was not that painful. We both had Regenerin treatment during the Sparty.

Most of Diana's client experience pain when they're getting pricked.

After that a mask will be applied to your face which has a very cool effect. It's so cold and it's gonna cover your eyes and lips so the only way you can breathe is thru your nose, and that's gonna take for 20 minutes.

A total of an hour treatment.

Common problems for men is having an oily skin so it is recommended to get a facial treatment every 2 weeks.

Robbie and I had a great time at the sparty. It was an additional confidence for us. Oh yeah!

Also try Diana's Diamond Peel, it's their best seling services.

Help Save Palawan

The Philippines’ Last Ecological Frontier: Saving the island of Palawan, one signature at a time

Falling in love with the beauty of Palawan is falling deeply in love with the immaculate splendor of Mother Nature.

One can only imagine how trip to this lovely destination, lying more than 500 kilometers southwest of Manila, can turn into the most unforgettable leisure experience ever. Known for its rich natural resource that have awed and captivated both Filipinos and foreigners alike, the island of Palawan has earned the distinction of being the most biodiverse island in the Philippines. It serves as home to 40% of the country’s remaining mangrove areas, 35% of the country’s coral reefs, 17 biodiversity areas, 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River Natural Park and the Tubbataha National Marine Park), and eight declared protected areas. It is also the provinces that houses one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

The variety of natural life found in this vast strip of greenery that is known as Palawan is unmatched anywhere in the Philippines. This is the reason why the National Geographic Traveler magazine hailed the province as the best island destination in the entire East and Southeast Asia, and the 13th best island in the world having “incredibly beautiful natural seascapes and landscapes” both in 2007.

Ten million signatures to save Palawan

Despite the presence of such a very rich and diverse natural culture, Palawan is also a very fragile piece of land, with a thin layer of topsoil that is prone to erosion and landslides. And with aggressive mining taking place in certain areas of Palawan, it will only be a matter of time before the whole island sinks into the sea and be forgotten as a once proud and pristine natural treasure.

If the Philippines were to lose Palawan, the country will not only lose a valuable and irreplaceable treasure. More significantly, it will lose one of the Earth’s most precious and beautiful legacy to the next generation.

This is the advocacy being championed by the “Save Palawan Movement” as it encourages Filipinos to help stop mining in Palawan and other key biodiversity areas in the country by joining the march towards 10 million signatures aimed at saving the Philippines’ last ecological frontier.

“Currently, there are about 15 ongoing mining operations in Palawan, according to the Palawan NGO Network Inc. (PNNI). An even more shocking and outrageous fact is the number of pending mining applications in Palawan, which now stands at more than 100 as we speak,” says Gina Lopez, Managing Director of ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. “We have to note that contrary to what mining companies claim, the local mining industry only accounts for 1.3% of the country’s gross domestic product.”

In fact, a recent study conducted by UP School of Economics Dean Dr. Arsenio Balisacan reveals that of all the identified sectors, only mining had an increase in poverty incidence in a span of more than one decade from 27.84% in 1988 to 48.71% in 2009. This gives it the highest poverty incidence rating in 2009, followed by agriculture (47.92%).

This is just one of the recent details and researches that are set to be shared with campaign partners during the Save Palawan Movement General Assembly on November 21, 2011.

Also set to impart their knowledge and expertise during the said gathering are esteemed environmental scientists and researchers from Ateneo de Naga University and Ateneo de Manila University, led by Dr. Tony La Vina the head of the Ateneo School of governance, Dr. Boying Bautista and Atty. Gerthie Anda, who will be discussing the impact of mining to the economy;  Atty. Jean Feliciano on the livelihood of Indigenous People in Brooke’s Point in Palawan; and freelance documentary producer and director Bernie Lopez on the largest mining venture in the country that is threatening Mindanao provinces with a potential mega disaster and other environmental and tribal issues.

“This very important gathering not only aims to renew our commitments for Palawan’s cause but also to increase awareness and share the vision preserving the natural beauty of Palawan and all the other key biodiversity areas here in the Philippines,” shares Lopez.

“With the help of more Filipinos, we hope to be able to save Palawan by asking both the local and the national governments to say no to mining so that we can protect one of our last remaining treasures and give the future generations a more beautiful and livable environment.”

Featured Gym: Fitness First Alabang

Fitness First Alabang now a Platinum Club

Good news to all the fitness enthusiasts out there! Fitness First, the world’s largest health and fitness group has upgraded its Alabang club to a Platinum Club that offers no less than truly world-class fitness club experience. The new and improved Fitness First Platinum Alabang was launched to the media on October 26, 2011.

Touring the elite Fitness First Platinum Club nestled in the vibrant retail area of Westgate Alabang was a treat. Encased in glass windows and three-storey high, the gym provided a relaxing view of the Emerald City of the Philippines. Members of the media got acquainted with its high-end Technogym equipment and upgraded Cycling Studio.

All geared up!

Media guests were treated to Fitness First’s Freestyle Workout – the newest Personal Training program composed of workouts such as S-X or Suspension Exercise, ViPR, and Kettlebell. Alabang Platinum is the first among all Fitness First clubs to offer these exciting programs.

Developed by a former US marine in the absence of conventional workout equipment in the field, the suspension trainer helps develop core body strength while reducing the chance of injury. It allows users to use their own body weight in performing exercises for improving strength, balance, cardiovascular coordination, core stability, and flexibility.

ViPR stands for (Vi)tality, (P)erformance, (R)econditioning. It is a workout that uses evolved training tools to foster purposeful motion and blend strength training with functional training and movement. This pipe-like tool is used for whole body workout and is more effective than traditional weight training.

Resembling a cannonball with a handle, the Kettlebell used to be a part of the conditioning training of the Russian military. It combines cardiovascular, flexibility and strength training as it enhances body awareness. It is also excellent for wrist strength and stabilization and is unique for the swing series.

Aside from these intensive programs, guests were also given the opportunity to try Hot Flow yoga. Practiced in a 37 degree heated room, Hot Flow is an exhilarating workout which builds physical coordination and mental focus. Ideal for those ready to challenge their fitness level, this popular group exercise class is perfect for those seeking strength and flexibility not only for the body, but the mind and spirit as well.

Find out for yourself!

Fitness First Platinum Club gives its members the total first-class workout experience. They can now expect more intense, more focused and more personal training using the newest workout equipment and guided by the finest Fitness First instructors.

Mark Ellis, Fitness First Country Manager said, “Only certified instructors are allowed to teach at Fitness First Platinum to ensure professionalism and high quality instruction in the group exercise classes. What sets a Platinum Club member apart from a regular club member is the premium service and first-class facilities,” he added.

“Our goal is to provide comfort and convenience to our members whenever they go to our clubs. To do this, we offer readily available workout clothes and hand and bath towels to our members. Various personal toiletries are also provided in the locker room,” explains Derren Saunders, Fitness First Alabang Platinum Club General Manager.

A better you!

On top of these, Fitness First boasts of dedicated trainers, nutritionists and staff who have a passion for wellness. Fitness First Alabang as a pioneer branch celebrating its 9th year anniversary certainly illustrates that.

Pioneer staff Anle Maderazo-Almeida, 30, Learning & Development Manager, Fitness First Philippines shared, “At Fitness First, you get to customize your experience. If you do more than what is expected of you, you get rewarded. It’s a place where you can find who you want to be.” She narrated that the supportive and dynamic workplace atmosphere made her to stay with the company for over nine years. “The management genuinely listens to its people, and implemented an open door policy that made me feel free to express myself. We were constantly innovating for efficiency and for keeping up with the new industry trends and for serving our clients better.”

Rency Magsino-Caga-anan, 31, has been serving as Nutritionist for Fitness First Alabang since 2003. She said that she met her closest friends in Fitness First Alabang, and the branch would always have a special place in her heart.

Aside from encouraging a family feel within the company, Fitness First also enhances the relationships of its members who mostly sign up with their friends and family. Most of them include a trip to the gym as part of their bonding activity.

Jomar Visda, 34, pioneer fitness instructor said that it was amazing to see the transformation of his clients. “Alberto, a ‘Fitness First New You Achievement Award’ contender, changed from being a reserved person to a handsome superman look-alike,” he shared.

Even Magsino-Caga-anan agreed that it was inspiring to witness members coming to Fitness First and seemingly blooming into a different person. Happy to be a part of that transformation, she left the following reminder, “As we say here in Fitness First, be yourself - only better!”

Now, are you ready to be transformed?[gallery orderby="rand"]

NO FEAR! SOYAMI SOYA CHIPS!

Eating snacks without the guilt

I am sick and tired of trying to look and investigate the ingredients of snack foods available on the racks of groceries or convenient stores. I always wanted to be sure that I will not be a victim of another new COMMERCIAL JUNK FOOD that is out there on the market that will make the consumer’s life more miserable after consuming the addictive poisonous snacks. I have always said to myself that I will not be a victim of paid media hype selling toxic products
clothe as a healthy food. Most of the time they use celebrities to sell the venomous nibblers.

No, I am not paranoid. I just wanted to stay healthy. I want my internal organs and blood pressure to remain normal after ingesting something that will satisfy my hunger.

One day, while digging among the gamut of snacks available that will go with my fruit juices, Lo and Behold, something fell on my head from the top rack like manna from heaven! A Soyami Soya Chips Pizza flavored! I’ve searched where it came from and found two more flavors; the White Cheddar and the Original flavor. It is made with Real Soya, no MSG, High in Protein and Calcium, O% transfat, 0% in Cholesterol and Sodium, too. It was a priceless find, a treasure among the trashes that is being sold everywhere. Isn’t that
just wonderful?!

Now, I can enjoy and eat my snacks without fear and being guilty. I am contended with
the three flavors to choose from. But I hope that they will add more varieties soon. Now, what flavor is my juice today? Apple, cherry…

Feel the Natural Ingredients for Skin Care

I love plant based food because of its natural taste. And my love for these kind of foods extends to what I put on to my skin, specially to my face. In fact I love rubbing an orange peel to my face because it gives a cool relaxing feeling. And this is just one of the natural ingredients that I think is very beneficial and good for our skin.

When I went to the grand opening of Nature Republic (Korea's most popular beauty shop) at SM Fairview I discovered a lot og great natural ingredients such as Aloe Vera. Nature has provided a veritable and endless supply of amazing natural ingredients that have a wide array of uses. Aloe Vera, Beeswax, Burdock, Calendula, Chamomile, Coconut, Ginger, Grapefruit, Guava and Grapefruit are just a few naturally grown wonder plants that is good for the skin.

Skin is a protective outer layer of the body that helps in keeping the internal organs safe and healthy.

Using natural skin care products protects us from any harmful effects and chemicals.

True to its slogan "Feel the nature", Nature Republic uses some of its precious ingredients  from earth; medicinal plants and healing flowers, seawater from around the world, used as prescriptions from ancient times based on natural concepts and as mother nature intended, processed and formulated through modern technology.

Blue Lagoon water from Polynesia; Glacial Water from the Alps; Deep Sea Water from Greenland; Ocean Area Pine Tree from France; Hawaiian Hibiscus; Madagascar Butdelria; Morocco Monoi; gold Caviar; North American Kawai; are the ingredients that they use to make sure that it is all natural and safe to our skin.

Now I tried some of their products to know how it feels.

Aloe Vera Soothing Gel is their best seller. It has many ways of use. Instant moisturizing pack for dry skin, base make up for luminuos face, after shave, body care for soft and misturizing skin, hair treatment for shiny hair, relax swollen eyes, lip treatment to make baby lips, nail care essence and as mask pack.

I regret I did not buy this when I was there.

I also tried using the Mist, it moisturizes and refreshes the face. It gives light and cool feeling.

This is something that I recommend if you don't want your face to look so hagard. Spray this to your face and will give you a fresh look.

I enjoyed putting some Aqua Fluid to my face. After putting I feel like I just had a bath.

It is very useful as make up remover.

For a limited supply, Nature republic  gives you free BB Cream and Facial Wash at P500 minimum purchase with more freebies like, the masks and toner, Facial Wash, Snail Therapy lotion and other exciting stuff. They'd also give you free Membership Card at a minimum purchase of P1K.

Visit their branches at Ground Level, Main Building of SM Fairview and SM North EDSA, The Block.

It was really a sweaty day for me because it was hot and sunny outside. In this kind of season Nivea deodorant is the one that works best. Roll-ons are sticky but with this one it's not.

Using Nivea Silver Protect; the deodorant and the roll-on, you feel fresh after!

Compared to the previous brand that I used, Nivea is amazing it's the most effective and long-lasting.

With Nivea, I am able to go to the gym and work out without worrying about my underarm odor. It goes on very smooth, fights odor all day, all without any aluminum or heavy fragrances

A few years ago it started as a social networking site where millions of people went to share photos and videos, Multiply has evolved to become a fully functioning e-commerce site that not only connects shopping success for virtual shoppers but also real-life business success for its merchants.

Payment Options

Multiply also offers a secure, easy-to-follow payment scheme through its partnerships with BDO Virtual Card, BPI, Paypal and G-Cash. To lessen purchasing disputes, Multiply also has a Buyer Protection Program for merchants that protects their customer’s purchases.

In 1527, the Swiss thinker Paracelsus demonstrates that only a small part of the plant has an effect upon the human body (1g per 20 kg of plant), which is what we now call active substance. Later on, scientists have developed methods to isolate these substances.

However, the first complete categorization of all known medicinal plants was printed in a book called Theatrum Botanicum by John Parkinson in 1640 AD. In 1649 Nicholas Culpeper published A Physical Directory, which is considered one of the best herbal pharmacopoeia manuals still quoted today.

The world of today is a world of progress, no one doubts about that.

We have managed to do in 200 years of continuous industrial revolution, what we couldn’t do in thousands and thousands of tumultuous history.

And yet, with all these technological breakdowns and synthetic substances, artificial food, not to mention the reign of King Plastic, some people still find the power and the wisdom to ask themselves how people in the past remained healthy and fit without nutritional supplements, drugs, even antibiotics.

Their secret was that that they used what Mother Nature gave them: the plants to cure themselves. Fortunately, this knowledge hasn’t been forgotten; even if they’re not so widely used, plants have found their place in our civilization.

The story begins thousands of years ago, before the recorded history, when man didn’t know how to write or read, but knew how to follow their instincts.

They discovered that certain herbs could alleviate their pains, others could make a wound disappear and others could even kill them.

In the course of time, societies developed and with them appeared the means to transmit their knowledge other than orally.

5000 years ago, in Ancient China, people used rhubarb (Rheune palmatum) as a purgative without knowing anything about the actual active substances they contained.

Also, they used Ephedra to treat asthma, even though the substance called ephedrine was discovered much later, in 1887 AD.

All oriental ancient civilizations had their insights into the fascinating world of botany, as plants were one of the few elements to which they could resort to heal themselves. The famous king Hammurabi of Babylon (18th century BC) recommended mint to cure constipation and other digestive disorders.

Mesopotamian doctors considered that the best time to take a herbal medicine was at night or early in the morning, a principle which is confirmed nowadays by modern studies.

The Indians had an entire system of rules, prescriptions, remedies and practices, called Ayurveda, many of which involved the use of plants. They also had strict rules about when, by whom and from where the plants should be collected

People in Ancient Egypt knew and used the castor-oil plant, wormwood, saffron and oregano to heal and disinfect wounds; they also put coriander in their tombs so that the spirit will remain healthy in his afterlife.

There are written records of their use of garlic (especially for the workmen who built the pyramids), indigo, mint and opium. The Greek and Roman civilizations have made a major contribution to the medical science.

Although much of their studies stemmed from other cultures (Mesopotamian, Egyptian), they added precious information and, in time, they became more and more concerned about the diseases and cures as natural and realistic processes, rather than spiritual or magical.

Physicians like Hippocrates, Dioscoride and others have recorded their discoveries; their works would enlighten the pre-medieval civilizations for many centuries after their death. Dioscorides wrote De Materia Medica (1st century AD), which contained a list of hundreds of medicinal plants, along with their description and curative qualities.

The Dark Ages met with a lack of any further recorded herbal studies; the knowledge was probably transmitted from generation to generation – parents taught children, monks, even herbalist taught apprentices.

However, there lived a great Persian physician by the name of Avicenna (Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Abd Allah Ibn Sina) who wrote one of the most famous books in the history of medical science: The Canon, which also contained information about how plants should be used and their properties.

As chemistry as a science developed, physicians started to use more and more widely synthetic medicines, such as aspirin, which proved to have side effects. Yet all pharmacists and drug producers confirm the fact that, unlike artificially synthesized substances, medicines extracted from plants are more accessible to the metabolism and friendlier with the human body.

What type of oil is good for your heart?

Love your fish oil

Eating fish has always been championed as one of the ways to achieve optimum health. But apparently, fishes contain a more potent, health-giving benefit and that is fish oil, which contains omega-3 fatty acids, a type of polyunsaturated ‘good’ fat that is important to our health.
According to experts at the recently launched Omega-3 Academy, fish oil contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are examples of omega-3 fatty acids.

These play a crucial role in achieving optimum health and protection from certain diseases. Moreover, DHA is considered the building blocks of the brain and nervous system while EPA promotes good blood flow, thereby protecting the heart. EPA is also anti-inflammatory so it helps ease the effects of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.
Established by a multi-disciplinary panel of professionals from fields like clinical nutrition, cardiology, family health and diabetology, the Omega-3 Academy Asia is comprised of expert panel of medical professionals from across Asia, who have come together to increase understanding and education on the role and use of omega-3.

Sponsored by sanofi-aventis Consumer Health, the Omega-3 Academy Asia is an Asia-specific organization chaired by Professor Andrew Sinclair from Deakin University in Australia, with members from Korea, Thailand and the Philippines’ Dr. Tommy Ty-Willing, an endocrinologist and Dr. Eugene Reyes, a cardiologist.

The Omega-3 Academy Asia is committed to increasing awareness and understanding of omega-3 fish oil by undertaking a number of initiatives to highlight the impact of decreased omega-3 intake in current Asian diets and convey the associated health benefits of increasing omega-3 consumption.

Good for your heart
Many studies since the early 70s have shown a link between high consumption of oily fish and reduced mortality rates associated with heart disease. For example, a study of Japanese people living in Japan or Brazil showed people who ate fish more often had reduced risk factors for heart disease like obesity, elevated blood pressure and blood sugar imbalances.
These findings, together with the earlier observational studies on Greenland Eskimos, form the basis of the theory that consumption of omega-3 fish oil could prevent artherosclerosis (thickening of the arteries), thrombosis (formation of blood clots inside vessels) and their associated diseases.

Helps increase brain power

In 1972, evidence was published showing that certain omega-3 fatty acids mainly, DHA, was involved with brain growth and development, with research first carried out in rats. Subsequent studies in chickens, primates and eventually humans showed that omega-3 fish oil is essential

for brain development and function. Furthermore, DHA is essential for vision, thought processes and the control of brain function.

Moreover, DHA is also crucial for an unborn child’s brain and is considered critical for brain development, maintenance and intelligence. Other studies have also shown that elderly people with low levels of DHA in the blood are more likely to develop age-related cognitive decline, memory loss and poor concentration than those with higher DHA levels. Furthermore, increased consumption of fish oil has been linked to reduced levels of mild depression, memory loss as well as mood and anxiety disorders.

Fish oil keeps you going

In autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, increased levels of omega-3 (especially EPA), have been shown to limit the multiplication of abnormal cells. Dietary fish oil has been shown to have a positive effect on suppressing chronic and acute inflammation in the joints.
At least 13 clinical trials have been undertaken using fish oil in rheumatoid arthritis, all in patients with late disease who’ve had the disease for at least 10 years. The most consistent benefits have been reduced morning stiffness and decreased tenderness of joints.
One form of inflammation that is effectively addressed by EPA is arthritis. EPA’s anti-inflammatory properties have also been proven to be effective in warding off other inflammatory diseases such as atherosclerosis, etc.

See clearly
Omega-3 fatty acids DHA & EPA found in fish also have eye-protective effects. Recent research has shown that regularly eating fish could help reduce vision impairment such as macular degeneration in old age. People with intermediate or advanced age-related visual impairment are encouraged to consider increasing their omega-3 consumption.
To help you get your omega-3 requirement, there’s Cenovis Fish Oil, an all-natural fish oil supplement that contains optimal amounts of omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. An Australian brand, Cenovis Fish Oil is a health supplement that has many health benefits.
International guidelines recommend that an adult should consume 500 milligrams of fish oil per day. This can be achieved by eating 2-3 servings of oily fish per week. For people with heart disease, double this amount is recommended (1,000 milligrams of fish oil per day). There are reports on the side effects of fish oil: diarrhea and skin rash. However, test results find these inconclusive and not directly attributable to fish oils.

Costing less than P10 per capsule, Cenovis Fish Oil comes from Peruvian waters, one of the world’s cleanest seas. Unlike other fish oil that come from shark, cod and other big fish, Cenovis Fish Oil comes from 3 kinds of small fish: anchovies, mackerel and sardines. These are small deep sea fish that reproduce easily, thus, no worries of extinction. Additionally, these fishes have a short lifespan making them less exposed to pollutants and contamination in the seas.

Individually packed for freshness, the fish oil extraction of Cenovis is done in a highly-advanced and sanitary process in Norway, which makes it odorless and with no fishy aftertaste. Cenovis Fish Oil is available in all Mercury Drug outlets and other leading drugstores nationwide.
