Easy Tips if you want to Go Vegetarian

Some reason why going vegetarian becomes hard for most people is because we are conditioned to eating meat. It has been part of our tradition to eat meat during parties and occasions.

If you are serious on becoming vegetarian someday you have to aim removing that condition (the taste of meat) and make yourself conditioned to eating vegetables.

You don't do this overnight. It has to be easy and slow. It takes time because again we are conditioned to eating meat for so long.

As a start, make a timeline to gradually reduce your intake of meat and this will help you achieve your goal to make yourself pleased eating vegetables.

Empanada Vegetal in Barcino Fort

Barcino is a wine house and Resto along The Fort Global City in front of The Mind Museum.  Located exactly at Unit 101 Forbeswood Heights, Rizal Drive, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig

Wines are usually paired with meat dishes but the good thing about Barcino is they offer interesting food for vegetarians.

During the flood I went to my Mom's pad at Forbeswood Heights and we had dinner at Barcino which is only downstairs where they lived. It was interesting that there's a lot of vegetarian options in their menu.

Because the food is expensive I just had an order of Empanada Vegetal
It tastes really really great, very crispy and the spinach were so fresh.

Teresa Bergen Author of Vegetarian Asia: A Travel Guide

I recently came across with someone who read my blog and I was surprised when she said that she liked my blog. She said that she's interested to interview me about vegetarianism in the Philippines. I am so honored to answer all her questions and I hope that it could help her in writing her book about vegetarianism in Asia. In return I also did an interview with her. Her answers might help those who also wants to go vegetarian.

Teresa Bergen is a writer living in the US. Back in the '90s, she published a book called Vegetarian Asia: A Travel Guide. She's now updating it for a 2012 edition. Check out her website at www.teresabergen.com

Here's my interview with her:

How long have you been vegetarian/vegan? why did you become vegetarian?

I stopped eating meat about 30 years ago, when I was 12 years old. One night my mother fixed steak for dinner and I pictured a cow minding her own business and somebody slicing a big chunk out of her side. I imagined how painful that would be. If I was a cow, I wouldn’t want to be killed for dinner. Being American, I had access to lots of different types of food. It occurred to me that there were plenty of things to eat besides animals. These days I am mostly vegan, but make exceptions for things like birthday cakes.

Is it difficult to be veg? what makes it difficult?
Not in my usual daily life, where I’m doing the shopping and cooking. Sometimes when I travel, or especially when I go out to dinner with other people or to somebody’s house it can be uncomfortable. I don’t really like to draw attention to myself, and avoid preaching to an unreceptive and uninterested audience.

What changes did you notice in you when you became veg?
Since I was only 12 and the rest of my family was not familiar with meatless diets, I wasn’t sure what to eat. I remember a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches, pancakes, cookies and ice cream. So I didn’t suddenly become super healthy.

What is the usual reaction of people who just knew you’re veg?
Most of my non-veg friends are kind and go out of their way to make sure there’s something I can eat. But I get a fair share of heckling and derision, mostly from people I don’t know very well. Where I live in Portland, Oregon, there’s kind of a backlash against vegetarians, and especially vegans. People like to make fun of us. It’s annoying. I mean, we’re just trying to do our little part to cut down on the world’s rampant cruelty.

How did you get into animal rights advocacy?
I don’t do much besides write about other people’s efforts. Hopefully that helps raise people’s awareness.

Did you volunteer in any organization?
Not currently. In the past, I’ve mostly volunteered with organizations that benefit people, like teaching yoga to folks in drug rehab and ESL to immigrants and refugees.

Where do you get your food?
I mostly shop at Trader Joe’s, a supermarket that has its own line of generics, with lots of vegetarian and vegan items. It’s cheaper than the health food stores. There's a local farm store down the street, so I try to buy my produce there.

Can a vegetarian like Geneva Cruz survive in the wild

Survivor is a game of survival. In the previous episodes of Survivor, international and local there are tasks wherein you really need to eat animals. If Geneva Cruz is a vegetarian, I don't think she is ready for this.

Yes, a vegetarian can survive in the wild because there's plenty of plants and the vegetation is conducive. You can choose to eat in your way of living. But cases like the Survivor game, it involves meat eating. I think Geneva could have thought about it before she decided to join the fact that she was a vegetarian.

On the other hand it was not the main reason at all why she left and quit the game. Heres the reason why courtesy of Pep.ph

"I don't think 3 million pesos and being named as Sole Survivor is all worth the pain that I am feeling right now," says Geneva Cruz (right) about her decision to leave the reality show. Her partner, KC Montero, opted to stay in Survivor Philippines Celebrity Doubles Showdown. Courtesy of Pep.ph

GENEVA BREAKS DOWN. The day became more drama-filled when vegetarian singer Geneva Cruz admitted that she wanted to pull out of the game. She and her partner, KC Montero, had a heart-to-heart talk about her decision.

Geneva tearfully admitted, "This is not real. I absorb everything around me...I did everything to help. I cannot do this...it's money, yeah. You wanna win. I got nothing...I am not going to make any effort getting alliances."

KC asked directly, "So you are gonna quit?"

Geneva replied, "This is my first day and I'm falling apart. Everything is against the things that I believe in. I know that this is not real. I know at the end of the whole thing, this is just a game. And I know what's gonna happen."

When KC left, Arnold appeared and tried to console Geneva. Geneva adamantly told him, "Go away! I'm not gonna change my mind. I can't play this game. I want to win this game with him. He [KC] is selfish. He's gonna get you guys too, you know. I'm not gonna change my mind."

Geneva and KC continued their dialogue along the beach shore. While Geneva was writing something on the sand, she pointed to KC, "You're gonna hate me for the rest of your life." Geneva then wrote her son's name "Heaven" on the sands of Palawan.

KC stated, "You must be doing this for some reason. It's written here. Heaven."

Geneva shot back, "Ask my son. Ask your son. Would he rather see his mother suffer and not fight for what she believes in or the P3 million pesos? You know him more. You know what he is gonna say..."

KC was visibly disappointed and upset with Geneva's decision since he wanted to stay in the game.

While waiting for their ride back, KC hugged Geneva.

The Fil-Am DJ/host told Geneva that he wanted to say good-bye to the other castaways. But this gesture pissed off the singer. She went ballistic and told KC, "You only care about yourself. You're supposed to protect me here. I told you I cannot anymore...they're filming me."

For those people becoming vegetarian these days

It is not always true that vegetarians are thin and meat eaters are fat.

The most common reason why people go vegetarian is because they want to loose weight. But I know a lot of vegetarians who's fat. Yes going vegetarian can help you loose weight but you should also do it with exercise.

The good thing about being vegetarian is you develop control and discipline. It is not easy changing diet specially for us Filipinos who are very conditioned to meat. Going vegetarian is easy. There plenty of market and talipapa here.

Give up eating Beef :

This is not hard , because you can still eat pork, chicken and fish. So do this for a month or two. Just make sure that you don’t eat beef anymore straight for a month.

Give up eating Pork :

When you can now give up beef, it’s time to give up pork. You can still eat chicken and fish. It is easier to give up, knowing that pork is the primary cause of diseases. And we all know that it makes us fat since it is very high in bad cholesterol. Do this for a month or two. Just make sure that you don’t eat pork anymore straight for a month.

Give up eating chicken:
What’s wrong with eating chickens ? Well there’s a lot, but anyway you will soon have to give up eating chicken. Maybe this will be hard for you so do this for two months or more , but make sure to give up eating chicken soon.

Do give up eating beef, pork and chicken in a year or two and it will be easier for you to go vegetarian or vegan. Don’t make it hard for you, there will always be an easier way that will help you achieve your goal. Going vegetarian does not end on giving up the food that you are conditioned to eat, it involves mindset, positive thinking, proper hygiene and a healthier lifestyle.

MUSHROOM or MUSHROOM BEEF BURGER?

(CHECKING WHAT YOU EAT)

Are you a vegetarian and a mushroom
lover? You’d better be careful with your mushroom burger!

The MUSHROOM BURGER JOINT, which originated in Tagaytay City, has now branched out in Katipunan, West Avenue, and a stall in Ateneo De Manila University. They offer Mushroom with Beef Burger, Mushroom with Pork Burger, and Mushroom with Chicken Burger. It goes with French fries and drinks of your own choice. I am sure you’ll love the tasty burgers and the delicious French Fries. But if you are a pure vegetarian, a Veggie, it is better for you to
order Mushroom Sandwich because it has no other meat ingredients that veggies tries to avoid.

Don’t be confused with the Mushroom Burger items which were mentioned earlier because
it contains meat and poultry. You might be misled by its name, Mushroom Burger, thinking that it is made of pure mushroom. It was actually a misnomer since the supposed flavor, like beef, chicken and pork was not declared. Its ingredients will only be revealed if you’ll ask the Food Servers. I am sure that the company of Mushroom Burger has no intention of lying or misleading its precious customers.

But if you’re a vegetarian check out the Mushroom Sandwich, it is one of the tastiest if not the best in town.

What's wrong with eating chickens ?

This is a flashback :

One day with my non vegetarian girlfriend, Dr. Tam's Vegan Haus was the nearest veg rests that I know when we were at that location and so we went there. And that day was also our monthsary and we were in Pasig.
The food was really great and it was all delicious , the aura of that place was calm and relaxing, except for the lesbian personnel who was very annoying.

Anyway the food was great except that my girlfriend didn't liked it. As much as I enjoyed the food we ordered, my girlfriend can't take it, she craves for chicken. Just like every time I'm in the mood for eating, she will grab for a chicken.

Reasons why it's wrong to eat chicken :

  • not safe to eat especially if it's factory farm chickens

  • most tortured animal in terms of fast food business are chickens

  • according to the Vegetarian Starter Kit, almost all birds raised for food in the U.S. are factory farmed

  • According to the Vegetarian Starter Kit, not just many chickens suffer from chronic respiratory diseases, weakened immune systems, and bronchitis but they are genetically manipulated and dosed with antibiotics to make them grow so large and quick that they become crippled under their own weight.

  • According to a report by the United State Department of Agriculture (USDA), more than 99 percent of chicken carcasses are contaminated with E. coli bacteria by the time they reach the market.

  • chickens are major source of bird's flu

The benefits of being vegetarian

Today is the end of Ramadan. I just stayed home. Resting is in harmony with vegetarian lifestyle, because being calm develops a healthy mind, more than that it extracts creative juices.

Aside from swimming I also do running as part of being fit, and I do it most of the time alone in UP acad oval.

It has become a habit that after running I will eat at Khas Food House because it's the most veg friendly place around.

Veggie Delight has been my favorite, it's a combination of spinach, potatoes and cabbage around a fried rice indian spiced.

I just arrived from Khas Food House and I would like to share a short story. It is about the benefits of being vegetarian

Here are the benefits of being vegetarian:

  • gives you good health, most of the celebrities go vegetarian to become sexy and good looking.

  • makes you a kind person, not eating meat is being kind to animals, no need to argue.

  • you become a loving person, when you don't eat meat you automatically love mother nature.

In my case :

  • you become attractive

  • regardless of being sweaty you still look good

  • always fresh

After paying my food, the waitress told me :
" Sir, tinatanong po nung dalawang bakla sa kabilang table kung kilala ba daw namin kayo at anong pangalan nyo ? "

I did notice that there were two guys on the next table, but never thought that they were gays. That's all happy dining !

My Writing Project Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs for 2010

A few days ago I decided to have my own domain hosted in wordpress platform, and then I exported all of my previous post from my old blogspot. It has been sometime since my blogger friends suggested that I put up a veggie blog so there, it's done.

I don't want to sound egotistic, but I've been rooting around in the internet world for a Filipino vegetarian site, and i find very few, if any, sites about it. So, at the risk of sounding prideful, I decided to submit my vegetarian blogsite to this competition I just found out about: the Writing Project Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs for 2010.

According to the rules :

  • Old blogs who move to a new domain are disqualified

  • Blogs who remove their archives just to fit in the cut-off date are disqualified.

Then again, to be safe, (as well as being conscious with the filipipno adage about "nagbubuhat ng sariling bangko", I’d rather not vote for my own blog but look for Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs which is somehow veggie related, and here goes my list:

healthblogs.org - Health Blogs at HealthBlogs.org

A free health blogs and free health web sites community

pinoyorganics.com - a blog by Pinoy Organics

I like this blog because it promotes organic living, vegetarianism is close to this lifestyle.

teacompletely.com - A blog written by two tea connoisseurs, Andrew dela Serna and Aileen Apolo.

I am also a tea explorer, I think I will learn different teas in this blog.

fatgirlnomore.com - A health blog by Teacher Ria.

I like this blog because it inspires fat people to aim for weight loss, I know a lot of vegetarian and non veg people who are fat, it's really not about the food they eat but the whole lifestyle , maybe that's the reason why they are fat. I'd like to know more.

manilareviews.com - a blog by the Manila Reviews Team

I like this blog because it features vegetarian restaurants in the metro.

healthtree.com - A health blog

I like to connect  to a community who are passionate about health

facebuko.com – a humor blog by Jonas Roque

I like this blog because I always drink fresh buko juice.

nomnomclub.com - A food blog by Jonel Uy

Farmville and My Mom

We used to live in the province, life there was simple. My family is very happy, we eat, pray and love together. We have a small farm , we plant fruits and vegetables. Especially my mom, among all she has the time to plant crops. She really likes planting. She has a nice figure because she has an active lifestyle. Planting was her exercise. Somehow she becomes busy by doing that. Despite of that she makes sure that she can give time to us.

We are now staying in Manila , life here is pressure and full of tension. There's no farm anymore. It was hard to adjust. We were introduced to internet technology. Everyday my mom plays farmville, she is online 24/7. She has no time for us anymore, all she does is planting crops, then harvest when needed. She gained weight so much. And she was so absorbed by the future. I am worrying about her already, she behaves differently. From the day she learned farmville, she gave almost all of her time there.

Future communication technology promotes danger. The more it gives comfort, the more it becomes risky. Yes it makes work faster, but it brings suffering in return. It is still recommended to engage in offline activities wherein there is interaction. Awareness is important. It's a feeling where presence creates a big factor.

fasting diet

A few days ago I had a half day fasting. But this time around I had a whole.

I will start my whole story 2 days ago, when I had my first whole day fasting diet for 2010. Some people fast in order to lose weight but I did it for cleansing the system, to get rid of toxins. I started not eating any single solid food from 8 pm of August 10 until 8 pm of August 11. But before I did that, my friend Abraham treated me to an eat all you can Mongolian Kublai Khan restaurant at Magallanes.  After that I decided to go on a whole day fasting. Then I started working.

The next day, when I was at the Greenwich Bigatin event at SM Megamall, my blogger friends were asking. "So, what are you eating ?" "There's nothing you can eat here." I said " It's Ok, I'll be fine." ( I didn't actually told them I'm on a fast )

The fact that I went vegetarian and I do fasting means I can control my sense of taste. I don't crave whenever I'm in an event and there's no vegetarian option. I am not over acting when I don't eat during events that I do cover, it's just I stick to the principles and lifestyle that I choose to live. And doing a whole day fast is just a regular fast that some people also do. Not so hard to practice, besides it has good effect on our body.

Here are the kinds of fasting ;

The Regular Fast : No food, but sufficient water to quench the thirst to dilute the pathogenic materials and thereby facilitate elimination through the skin and kidneys.

The Dry Fast : This means total abstinence from food and drink. It is a powerful method for promoting elimination of morbid matter and disease taints.

The Seven Day Fast : Cannot produce any harmful or weakening results.

The Long Fast : Extends from one to seven or more weeks, according to individual indications and the vitality of the patient.

source: http://www.healthandyoga.com/html/fasting/chooseyourfast.html

After my fast I drank malauhog buko juice.

Tips:

  • when breaking a fast , don't eat solid foods immediately , it might culture shock your stomach.

  • begin eating fruits and leafy veggies in order to gradually condition your stomach.

  • drinking fresh buko juice cures urine tarck infections.

  • fasting aids ulcer

  • rehydrates

  • it's tonic drink

  • kills intestinal worms

Next time I'll write about benefits of drinking buko juice.
