why people go vegetarian

There are four general reasons why people go vegetarian.

1. Health , those people who would like to become slim.

2. Environment, it’s a fact that being vegetarian is the best way to contribute to Mother Earth.

3. Ethics/Morals , there are people who acknowledge that animals also feel the same way, just like you and I , they don’t want to get hurt.

They feel pain.

4. Religion, some are obliged because meat eating is not allowed in their religion.

Tips on how to succeed in becoming vegetarian.

1. Have a strong determination

2. Some people tend to give up becoming vegetarian because they are not determined.

3. It takes months, years to become vegetarian, so don’t rush. Take it real slow.

4. Survival 101, a friend of mine started going vegetarian when he was in a military academy. His diet? : Rice, Toyo, Peanuts, Dingdong, Nesvita.

5. Most people are allergic to Eggs and Seafoods, shifting to plant based diet is a better choice.

Eat your veggies everyday!

Operation Smile: Changing Lives Forever

Not many can say that they’ve changed lives for the better. Not many can claim that a life was lived well in constant service to another.

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="314"]Dermatix-article 1-photo 4 (From L-R) Francis Gaspar, Manuel Contreras, Anna Alejandro, Atty. Rosamelle Cruz, Marissa Badoy, Candice Silerio, Emelita Flores, Cathy Pinto, Ron Lee, Dr. Jay Javier[/caption]

In the 30 years that Operation Smile has been working, it has given smiles to over 24,000 surgeries in the Philippines, which is where the operation began. Now, it has given smiles and changed forever to the lives of over 200,000 children and young adults – a feat that surely not anybody can catch up to any time soon.

The impact that a facial deformity has on a child is not merely physical. Every day, children with facial deformities look at themselves and question why they are different. On top of that emotional and psychological trauma, children with facial deformities usually suffer from respiratory ailments and ear infections.

Society can be very hard to children with cleft palates and lips. They are taunted and teased for not having that same smile as everyone else.

In the Philippines, one in every 500 babies born every year has a cleft lip, palate or both. This means that roughly 4,004 Filipinos out of 2,064 million born every year have this deformity. A report from the Philippine Birth Defect Registry – a partnership of the Department of Health and the US National Institute of Health’s Institute of Human Genetics – said that cleft lip and palates are among the top 12 birth defects in the country.

An act that picks up from 30 years of constant doing, Operation Smile is at it again. On the event of their 30th anniversary, they changed the lives of more children – this time in partnership with an expert in healing scars, Dermatix.

Scars are different among people. The body has different ways of dealing with wounds but unlike most misconceptions that scars are irreparable, scars can be healed forever with the help of effective skin products imbued with innovative technologies and skin-savvy ingredients. Dermatix is just that.

Dermatix is a formula specifically made to promote better scar healing. It is made with the innovative CPX (cyclopentasiloxane) technology for better flattening and softening of scars and Vitamin C for photoprotection and skin lightening.

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="314"]Dermatix -article 1-photo 1 Changing Lives Forever Through Operation Smile[/caption]

Dermatix and Operation Smile, a partnership that surely must be meant to be, will be healing scars of children who have cleft palates, lip palates, and other facial deformities that prevent them from living life as normally and as fully as they should.  This partnership’s goal is to give children a better shot in life without living with a permanent mark of pain and imperfection on their faces.

Children who are scarred for being different have the opportunity now to live life without the burden of an imperfect smile. Dermatix and Operation Smile are not only fixing smiles, they are changing lives forever.

Kicking Out Bad Skin Habits

I admit that I am guilty of committing skincare sins and need to be aware of such habits in order to prevent acne from getting worse.

Im vain, I love eating nuts, I sleep in a wrong way and I love to squeeze my pimples. I realize that I have a lot of bad skin habits.

Here's a list of bad skin habits that should be kicked out:

Gel products on your forehead
Most people say that I have good skin, what they don't know is I often get acne on my forehead because I would always apply gel on my hair until some of it goes to my forehead. After a few days acne arises. Tip: Don't rush putting on gel.

Nuts can make you nuts
I love nuts, especially nuts sold in the bus. "Mani, mainit, may bawang, bagong luto...bili na!" vendors would shout.

I've heard advices from friend that one cause of acne is too much eating of nuts. Sometimes it's true sometimes it's nut. Tip: Try greaseless nuts

Irregular change of pillow case
I sleep before 12 midnight lying face down on my pillow every night.
what they don't know about my pillow? I seldom change it's case and it's full of my saliva. :-) Obviously bacteria goes to my face until it aggregates acne. Tip: Regularly change your pillowcase

Squeezing pimple
I love squeezing when I have pimples and I know it's tempting. The act of squeezing a pimple pushes the bacteria deeper into the pores, causing inflammation, infection, and scarring. This is the worst thing that I do. Tip: Avoid temptations

With all these bad habits I still manage to have a good skin because I use a brand that helps me prevent skin acne.

Soon to be revealed!

Eating healthy food is not a guarantee for Acne-free skin

The challenge

I started going vegetarian on 2001 when I joined a mountaineering club when I was in college. I had a group of friends’ who were also vegetarians. I became attracted to their lifestyle and I find it cool at that time.

Heredity and the common misconceptions about Acne

My Dad who is now at his 60's said he never had an acne before because he never stayed late at night. My Dad’s skin is acne free and he looks great at his age. We only communicate via Facebook message:

Me: When was the last time you had an acne or pimple?

Dad: I never had an acne because I never stay late at night

Nurture Spa is accepting groups—from families to groups of friends on holiday, to members of corporate team-building activities.

Teambuiding package costs 4,000 Php/person and 10,000 Php for the facilitator fee (optional)

I stayed there together with my blogger friends as part of celebrating love and wellness as we search for good health.

There's a lot of things that I learned about the importance of wellness.

  • Stress is the main cause of chronic diseases and it kills people

  • Work causes a lot of stress.

  • When you appreciate things that you have more than things that you don't have your mind can easily adopt that state of being relaxed.

  • There is a great impact on the sense of smell. Aromatherapy is very helpful if you experiencing  a lot of stress.

I also learned that being mindful to what you see around you gives a relaxing effect on our mind. We had an activity; we went to the plantation and we need to mind the things that we see. We need to tell on our mind about the things that we see around.

The most relaxing activity we did was Qi Gong, it is an ancient breathing exercise which was lead by Hannah Holzgreve, an instructor from Germany.

After the Qi Gong activity we did an exercise called Exercise Circuit.

We had a short trek going to Pineapple farm of Nurture Spa before we had our lunch.

A wellness talk by Ms. Cathy Turvill, one of the owner followed after.

And I also learned a lot of therapy that help you feel relax and remove daily stress. During our stay I experienced the following types of therapy

  • Aromatherapy

  • Massage therapy

  • Hydrotheapy

  • Laughter Yoga

  • Vegetarian Food

It is very important to achieve a relax state of mind because it keeps the mind clear at all times which is conducive in maintaining a good health

I was also lucky to experience their facial massage called "dilag" and had a very relaxing sleep.

I feel like I'm in a paradise. One day is not enough for me to experience to good things here.

I will definitely find ways to be able to go back to this very beautiful place.

Karen Gayle-Sison is a graduate of Cohen's program at Cohen’s Lifestyle Centre. She had experienced bad things during her college days because she was obese.

Thanks to Cohen(weight loss program) because she achieved the ideal weight for her body, age and lifestyle. Now she feels more confident and enjoys what she eats with proper nutrition.

But started to gain more weight when she was in college. "I would order 2-3 cups of rice and would eat on a regular basis" she confessed. The result gained her 20 pounds in as early as 2 terms.
