Cocina Verde Cafe in Legazpi City

I've been to Legazpi City once, but I never had the chance to look for some vegetarian restaurants when I went there. Thank God the owner of Cocina Verde read my blog and shared the good news about her vegetarian restaurant.

Cocina Verde Cafe is the in-house vegetarian restaurant of the quaint and exotic Casa de Abuela Bed and Breakfast in Legazpi City that serves and sells malunggay pandesal, vegetarian pizza and pasta, home-made coco ice-cream and other nutrilicious vegetarian cuisine such as veggie barbecue, adobo and kare-kare.

Can a vegetarian like Geneva Cruz survive in the wild

Survivor is a game of survival. In the previous episodes of Survivor, international and local there are tasks wherein you really need to eat animals. If Geneva Cruz is a vegetarian, I don't think she is ready for this.

Yes, a vegetarian can survive in the wild because there's plenty of plants and the vegetation is conducive. You can choose to eat in your way of living. But cases like the Survivor game, it involves meat eating. I think Geneva could have thought about it before she decided to join the fact that she was a vegetarian.

On the other hand it was not the main reason at all why she left and quit the game. Heres the reason why courtesy of Pep.ph

"I don't think 3 million pesos and being named as Sole Survivor is all worth the pain that I am feeling right now," says Geneva Cruz (right) about her decision to leave the reality show. Her partner, KC Montero, opted to stay in Survivor Philippines Celebrity Doubles Showdown. Courtesy of Pep.ph

GENEVA BREAKS DOWN. The day became more drama-filled when vegetarian singer Geneva Cruz admitted that she wanted to pull out of the game. She and her partner, KC Montero, had a heart-to-heart talk about her decision.

Geneva tearfully admitted, "This is not real. I absorb everything around me...I did everything to help. I cannot do this...it's money, yeah. You wanna win. I got nothing...I am not going to make any effort getting alliances."

KC asked directly, "So you are gonna quit?"

Geneva replied, "This is my first day and I'm falling apart. Everything is against the things that I believe in. I know that this is not real. I know at the end of the whole thing, this is just a game. And I know what's gonna happen."

When KC left, Arnold appeared and tried to console Geneva. Geneva adamantly told him, "Go away! I'm not gonna change my mind. I can't play this game. I want to win this game with him. He [KC] is selfish. He's gonna get you guys too, you know. I'm not gonna change my mind."

Geneva and KC continued their dialogue along the beach shore. While Geneva was writing something on the sand, she pointed to KC, "You're gonna hate me for the rest of your life." Geneva then wrote her son's name "Heaven" on the sands of Palawan.

KC stated, "You must be doing this for some reason. It's written here. Heaven."

Geneva shot back, "Ask my son. Ask your son. Would he rather see his mother suffer and not fight for what she believes in or the P3 million pesos? You know him more. You know what he is gonna say..."

KC was visibly disappointed and upset with Geneva's decision since he wanted to stay in the game.

While waiting for their ride back, KC hugged Geneva.

The Fil-Am DJ/host told Geneva that he wanted to say good-bye to the other castaways. But this gesture pissed off the singer. She went ballistic and told KC, "You only care about yourself. You're supposed to protect me here. I told you I cannot anymore...they're filming me."

Eating Like a Rabbit

Help Save Palawan

The Philippines’ Last Ecological Frontier: Saving the island of Palawan, one signature at a time

Falling in love with the beauty of Palawan is falling deeply in love with the immaculate splendor of Mother Nature.

One can only imagine how trip to this lovely destination, lying more than 500 kilometers southwest of Manila, can turn into the most unforgettable leisure experience ever. Known for its rich natural resource that have awed and captivated both Filipinos and foreigners alike, the island of Palawan has earned the distinction of being the most biodiverse island in the Philippines. It serves as home to 40% of the country’s remaining mangrove areas, 35% of the country’s coral reefs, 17 biodiversity areas, 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River Natural Park and the Tubbataha National Marine Park), and eight declared protected areas. It is also the provinces that houses one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

The variety of natural life found in this vast strip of greenery that is known as Palawan is unmatched anywhere in the Philippines. This is the reason why the National Geographic Traveler magazine hailed the province as the best island destination in the entire East and Southeast Asia, and the 13th best island in the world having “incredibly beautiful natural seascapes and landscapes” both in 2007.

Ten million signatures to save Palawan

Despite the presence of such a very rich and diverse natural culture, Palawan is also a very fragile piece of land, with a thin layer of topsoil that is prone to erosion and landslides. And with aggressive mining taking place in certain areas of Palawan, it will only be a matter of time before the whole island sinks into the sea and be forgotten as a once proud and pristine natural treasure.

If the Philippines were to lose Palawan, the country will not only lose a valuable and irreplaceable treasure. More significantly, it will lose one of the Earth’s most precious and beautiful legacy to the next generation.

This is the advocacy being championed by the “Save Palawan Movement” as it encourages Filipinos to help stop mining in Palawan and other key biodiversity areas in the country by joining the march towards 10 million signatures aimed at saving the Philippines’ last ecological frontier.

“Currently, there are about 15 ongoing mining operations in Palawan, according to the Palawan NGO Network Inc. (PNNI). An even more shocking and outrageous fact is the number of pending mining applications in Palawan, which now stands at more than 100 as we speak,” says Gina Lopez, Managing Director of ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. “We have to note that contrary to what mining companies claim, the local mining industry only accounts for 1.3% of the country’s gross domestic product.”

In fact, a recent study conducted by UP School of Economics Dean Dr. Arsenio Balisacan reveals that of all the identified sectors, only mining had an increase in poverty incidence in a span of more than one decade from 27.84% in 1988 to 48.71% in 2009. This gives it the highest poverty incidence rating in 2009, followed by agriculture (47.92%).

This is just one of the recent details and researches that are set to be shared with campaign partners during the Save Palawan Movement General Assembly on November 21, 2011.

Also set to impart their knowledge and expertise during the said gathering are esteemed environmental scientists and researchers from Ateneo de Naga University and Ateneo de Manila University, led by Dr. Tony La Vina the head of the Ateneo School of governance, Dr. Boying Bautista and Atty. Gerthie Anda, who will be discussing the impact of mining to the economy;  Atty. Jean Feliciano on the livelihood of Indigenous People in Brooke’s Point in Palawan; and freelance documentary producer and director Bernie Lopez on the largest mining venture in the country that is threatening Mindanao provinces with a potential mega disaster and other environmental and tribal issues.

“This very important gathering not only aims to renew our commitments for Palawan’s cause but also to increase awareness and share the vision preserving the natural beauty of Palawan and all the other key biodiversity areas here in the Philippines,” shares Lopez.

“With the help of more Filipinos, we hope to be able to save Palawan by asking both the local and the national governments to say no to mining so that we can protect one of our last remaining treasures and give the future generations a more beautiful and livable environment.”

Eating at Impressca is Caring for the Environment

Impressca is an  Italian word that means "freshly served".  When you dine at Impressca, it is guaranteed that you will be eating pure organic food.

A Brief History of Impressca

Miss Beth first opened the restaurant in Legazpi City in 1994 when she was still in college.
2006, it closed down.
When God paved the way to reopen her business in 2008 she took advantage of a better way to revive the business by bringing it to the metro and educate the people living in the city  - enjoying life's pleasure with healthy choices while taking care of our Mother Earth.

We only have one planet to live and it's going to give up if we're not going to take care of it.

Healthy Food at Impressca

Impressca's specialty is "Create Your Own Salad"  – For only P99, diners can create their own mix of green veggies.

Another healthy food served is the 5 Herbs Marinara Pasta – consist of oregano, taragon, black pepper, basil and cumin. The most beneficial herbs are in this meal.

Eating at Impressca is  Caring for the Environment

For every P200 worth of purchase from Impressca, a customer contributes to planting a tree – a personal support to the livelihood of local farmers.

Miss Beth herself encourages the practice of urban gardening. It is one of the simplest ways to reduce the effects of pollution is to Plant more Trees, shrubs, herb garden, houseplants, vegetable crops, decorative flowers

They reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air, they increase oxygen, and they help eliminate toxins. Not only do they provide nourishment for the entire food chain as well as the earth itself, but they are a safe and effective solution to some of our biggest environmental problems, improving both outdoor and indoor environments.

Ingredients used by Impressca are harvested from their own garden.

Benefits of patronizing Organic Food to Farmers

Local farmers has lower capital investment, and has the ability to achieve higher premium in the market, and the ability to use traditional knowledge. When you eat at Impressca you support our local organic farming. It is the kind of farming that does not involve usage of chemicals such as chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides.

Take care of our environment, Live Positively!

Last week we went to Sapinit watershed to join  Coca Cola Foundation and Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation for a tree planting activity.

With the help of Sapinit Settlers Association, a community living in this area, we were able to plant huge number of trees in the area.

In this area they are being thought that they should work one with the nature in order to reach the economincs and ecological benefits not only a forest can provide.

A lot of them just recently transferred here over the years. And they are trying to find ways to make this area sustainable.

There's not too much livelihood here but with the program they're being thought what a mother tree is, what wildlings are.

Part of the activity we have some people gathering wildlings. They find a little shrub from a mother tree that falls into the ground which grows from 3-4 inches.
When they're too densely populated there's no enough nutrients to sustain all from tree.
So you really have to take it from the tree and connect the wild lings and  bring to the nursery.

Nurture them there and Plant them in a separate location when ready to be transplanted.

It is a multi year grant project with a budget of $84,000  from the funding team Coca Cola Atlanta.

The government will support the people living in the area. They train them not to cut the trees. If so in a sustainable manner.

The project also provides livelihood, they make a living by selling seedlings. Some of them are fruit bearing trees so they can sell the fruits.

Then all of that contributes in providing people livelihood so that they dont cut the trees.

Our Tree Planting Activity does not end here, this is our commitment forever.

Take care of our environment! Live Positively!

Ryan Noel and Canyl Trixia's wedding

Philippine Wedding Venues: Fernbrook Gardens

Last week was our  tour in Avida, Thanks to Chris Cahilig.

I saw a beautiful church along the way. See the picture above

It was like Amsterdam, the way I saw it in pictures. I am not really sure but I know how it looks like. Seeing a beautiful church  very well designed like Fernbrook is a wonderful experience. I keep on thinking about it, the pictures stays in my mind. I really wanted to go down that time and take a picture of it, in fact I wake up Enzo just to show the church. I said "Enzo, ang ganda nun oh!"

Since we were inside the van on our way to Avida Cavite. Pity on me, all I can do is stare at that beautiful facade of the church as it fades away. So I started to sleep again. The very night after our tour, I was dreaming about the church I saw. I keep on asking what was the name of that church. Nobody answered until I got this invitation from Iris.

I got invited by Iris Mejia-Acosta to attend the wedding of her big time Kuya Ryan. It was a fulfillment of my dream. Woohoo it will be on that church, yahoo! and I will now have the chance to see it in my face.

More that anything else I am so happy and honored to share some of the photos I took at Philippine Wedding Venues: Fernbrook Gardens.

Here's the map for your reference:

Enjoy the photos after the jump. Woot2x

Importance of Water Conservation

One of the great values I learned in our CWTS class is the Importance of Water Conservation
And then I was able to watch "Rango" movie, I was more enlightened about water conservation. Now I would like to share Green living tips from the Nestlé Club

There are a lot of ways to save water, and they all start with us!

  • Conserve water in the kitchen

  • If you wash dishes by hand, fill one half of the sink with soapy water and the other with clean water instead of letting the water run.

  • Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.

  • Water your houseplants with water saved from washing your fruits and vegetables or even when you clean your fish tank!

  • Thaw foods in the refrigerator or in a bowl of hot water instead of using running water.

  • Designate one glass for your drinking water each day or refill a water bottle. This will cut down on the number of glasses to wash.

  • Let your pots and pans soak instead of letting the water run while you clean them.

  • Conserve water in the bathroom

  • Drop your tissue in the trash instead of flushing it.

  • One way to cut down on water use is to turn off the shower after soaping up, then, turn it back on to rinse. A four-minute shower uses approximately 20 to 40 gallons of water.

  • Turn the faucet off while you shave, brush your teeth and lather up your hands.

  • Conserve water indoors

  • Wash only full loads in your washing machine, or adjust the water level to reflect the size of the load.

  • Pay attention to your water bill and become familiar with your water meter—use them to track your water use and detect leaks.

  • Fix leaky plumbing fixtures, faucets and appliances in the house.

  • Show children how to turn off the faucets completely after each use.

  • Washing dark clothes in cold water saves water and energy while helping your clothes to keep their colors.

  • Conserve water outdoors

  • For hanging baskets, planters and pots, place ice cubes under the moss or dirt to give your plants a cool drink of water and help eliminate water overflow.

  • Wash your pets outdoors in an area of your lawn that needs water.

  • Report broken pipes, open hydrants and errant sprinklers to the property owner or your water provider.

  • Water your lawn only when needed.

  • Don’t over-water your plants. Learn how much water they need and how best to apply just the right amount

Sustainable Packaging

This is the sixth day of Christmas, I decided to walk around UP diliman to get news about the upcoming UP Lantern Parade. Upon walking I found a belen made from recycled bottles of Coke and Sprite, I was so impressed by the concept. It reminded me of Live Positively Pillar Sustainable Packaging, which promotes packaging to be seen valuable resource as future use. I am going to share this to Cheftonio for inputs. *The belen I found was made by UP College of Education Students

Regarding the UP Lantern Parade, it will be held this coming December 17 and parade will start at 4 pm.
