3 Exercises to Build Cardio Fitness at Home

3 Exercises to Build Cardio Fitness at Home

Gyms provide a wide range of equipment for cardio, strength training, and more, but you can still get in good shape without a gym membership. In fact, a number of cardio exercises can be performed in the comfort of your home.

This article will cover some of the simplest and most effective ways to develop your cardio without going to a gym or even leaving your home. All you need is a pair of comfortable sneakers, a water bottle, and a towel if you want to use one. Keep in mind that along with exercise, your diet will also have a significant impact on your ability to lose weight or build cardio.

High Knees

High knees are a powerful workout for both cardio and muscular endurance, especially in your core and lower body. It should only take a minute or two to get a good workout, and you can do this exercise in relatively small spaces.

Start by standing up with your back straight and your feet close to each other or at shoulder width. Bring one knee up to your waist while maintaining form in the rest of your body. At the same time, move the opposite hand up as if you were running.

Try to keep a quick pace and do at least 25 reps per side for each set. In a full cardio workout, you should perform at least three sets of high knees. Don’t be afraid to adjust your reps up or down if you’re having trouble or if you feel like you can do more.

Mountain Climbers

Mountain climbers are another versatile exercise with a variety of benefits. To perform a mountain climber, get in a push-up position, but put your weight on your wrists instead of placing your palms against the ground.

Without curving your back, bring one knee to your chest and hold it there for a second or two. Switch sides and try to move quickly in order to build cardio in addition to muscular strength. You should perform three sets of twenty reps with one rep including both sides.

Jumping Jacks

One of the most well-known cardio exercises, it’s easy to underestimate the effects of jumping jacks. Even if you’re already familiar with the workout, it’s important to pay attention to your form instead of rushing through each set.

Try to complete at least 30 reps per set, although there’s nothing wrong with stopping earlier if you’re slowing down. Over time, you’ll naturally be able to increase your reps, eventually reaching three sets of 100 reps.

A gym membership can give you access to new equipment and provide additional motivation, but not having one isn’t an excuse not to exercise. These workouts are a great place to start building up your cardio on a tight budget and schedule.

Thanks to Robinsons Supermarket for organizing this run for the 10th year.

Finished 5K thru a long walk and little run of joy.

Coach Jim and Toni Saret said we just like mag jowa only.

Since it's a wonderful day we decided to go to ACE Water Spa after the run.

The Alpha Strength

Becoming strong is becoming a better better person.

Strength is important, and getting stronger physically is just the tip of an iceberg.

We all have our inner strength and it's just a matter of unleashing it.

Yours truly attended the launch of the latest craze in fitness - the Alpha Strength.

Alpha Strength is a gym which believes that when a person is strong, everything  becomes easy.

At the soft launch held on Saturday, I asked Paolo, one of my fellow practioner why is he working out in Alpha.

He says he is training hard because he wants to compete in cross fit, since he started doing cross fit a few years ago he decided to enroll at Coach Aaron Dela Cruz' class.

Just like Paolo, with Alpha Strength you can achieve your goals whatever it maybe.

Coach Aaron is the head coach of Alpha Strength and Alpha Strike.

"Becoming stronger is not easy;  it will test you, it will disappoint, and just like life, it is not a walk in the park. That' s why getting strong is worth it, and that's what we are; we make people stronger. In the four corners of Alpha strength, we will prepare you for whatever life will throw at you. What we want you to be, is the best, strongest of yourself." he says.

Alpha Strength is located in SPARTA 126 Pioneer St., Mandaluyong

Functional Fitness' Boot Camp

Right now Functional Fitness is having a promo called the Sergeant Ken’s Bootcamp. This type of training is Military Inspired Circuit Training wherein you are using full body work out. Wherein you are burning a lot of calories that has only few rest period.

Sergeat Ken’s Bootcamp is a military inspired workout training program. Tinawag siyang Sergeant Ken kasi siya yung army soldier and master trainer siya.

Yours truly tried it and interviewed Coach Sharon and Coach Tim of Functional Fitness Makati.

What are the benefits of this exercise program?

Coach Tim:
So ang mga benefits ng exercise na binibigay namin sa Sergeant Kent’s bootcamp training ay sa mga targeted “body centers” sa whole body. So ang target po niyan ay to increase muscle endurance, muscle strength and is also beneficial for Cardiovascular endurance. It's also good for power and muscle strength.

Coach Sharon:
Aside from that na military inspired workout siya, ginagamit mo dito ay more on body weight exercises. So if your aiming for having a lean muscle o kaya naman if you want to burn more calorie to lose yung body fat, okay tong bootcamp training. And since circuit training siya, so ibig sabhin you are using whole body muscles right? So konti lang or wala yung rest.

So ang ginagamit natin dito is dalawa. We call it Fixed Circuit Training and Freestyle Circuit Training. So pag sinabi mong Fixed Circuit Training it is more time-based.  Body weight exercises pa rin. Pag sinabi mong Freestyle type ng Circuit Training so you are basing more on the repetition range.

What are the target body parts?

Coach Tim:
Since Circuit Training siya first we do program, which we call Muscle Targeting. For example - 3 Exercise for the Shoulders na tuloy tuloy and after nun is recover. You switch to the Core Exercise, three exercise na tuloy tuloy and then to the lower body na. So whole body workout siya. 3 consecutive exercise with the same muscle group and all through out the whole body.

How can they enroll in boot camp?

Coach Sharon:
Right now we are having Bootcamp Trial Open House. So every Monday – Friday at 7pm those who want to join just simply message us sa facebook account ng Functional Fitness and then we will schedule you for your bootcamp. So pag nag-avail ka nito since promo siya, 450 per session, minimum of 12 sessions. And since group training siya, we should have at least  three participants or more.

What is good about doing this as a group?

Coach Tim:
So ang maganda pa dito sa bootcamp namin, e grupo siya. Mas maganda since marami kayo na mag wowork out sabay sabay, so mas mag eenjoy kayo. Kunwari group of friends kayong mag wowork out sabay sabay kayong magwowork out sa isang bootcamp. Mas maganda at mas madali niyong matatapos ang exercise pag tulong tulong, kasi teamwork to e.

So you just motivate your team para matapos niyo ung bootcamp.

Coach Sharon:
So sabi nga ni Sergeant Tim, ang bootcamp kasi, ang purpose niyan is not just working out for yourself. Nasa bootcamp training ka to motivate each other and to help each other not to stop but to finish yung work out routine mo.

Preparations if a group would like to try this program?

Coach Tim:
So siguro you need to eat first before tayo magbootcamp syempre were gonna schedule sa bootcamp training and i-schedule namin kayo for the training and kung anong date and anong time. Usually kasi ang na-eencounter naming dito sa functional fitness is MWF 7pm. Iba’t ibang coach naman po ang naghahandle dun. So it will take you to 1 – 2 hours of bootcamp training.

What are the preparations?

Coach Sharon:

So when it comes to preparation naman, hindi naman namin kayo basta isasabak agad dun sa main workout routine. So may warm up drills din tayong gagawin, so to prepare your muscle para injury-free.

Ang maganda kasi at advantage ng bootcamp is habang nag wowork-out ka we are checking closely sa form ninyo. So mapapansin niyo kanina ginawa namin is iniikutan naming kayo to check that form. Kasi importante dun yung reperforming the technique before you do the workout routine.

Where is it inspired from?

Coach Sharon:
Ang short history sa mga  training ng mga military groups. Before mataas yung ratio ng suicidal sa mga army. So na-inspire siya, nagcreate siya at gumawa ng bootcamp to lessen those incidents. Ang purpose ng bootcamp na to is to target your whole body muscle. To burn more calories to short or almost none yung rest.

Coach Tim:
Ang benefits po nito ay - it will increase your Cardiovascular Endurance, Muscle Strength and Endurance. Also maganda rin po ito to increase your power and ang benefits po nito ay maganda rin ito for weigth loss. At the same time to improve your strength and your power.

Achieve Efficient Results at OptionsStudio

I must admit that I was not interested at doing Pilates at first because for me it was an exercise mostly done by girls.
But since there is no harm in trying I decided later on to also try it because I think it's cool. So there, I tried it for five sessions and I am greatly satisfied with the results.
I undergone a private class at OptionsStudio RCBC in Makati with certified Pilates instructor Joella Bustamante, she is a sister of my friend JR Bustamante who suggested me to try this out.
I never thought I'd discover many important information about my body's behavior and how it is going to react on a certain movement.
For example if I'd step on Bosu. I'm gonna fall if I'm not going to balance. For me to be able to balance I must contract my abs and thigh muscles to gain a better stability. The more I practice this the more I become aware of how I maximize my movements in every activity that I do. More awareness easily distinguishes what body part to use.

It's hard at first but it becomes easy later on.
So here's what I did in one of my sessions. I showed photos of the following equipment and exercise to better explain how it is being done. The exercise usually last for an hour and I am really sweating a lot after. It's really good for burning fats.
Equipment 1. Bosu 2. Reformer, Long Box 3. Cadillac 4. Jungle Sports or Suspend
Exercise 1. Squats on the bosu, balances, Tree pose 2. Feet on straps on Suspend 3. Back rowing preps, airplane 4. Mermaid on the Cadillac 5. Suspended ab curl
Targeted muscles: Warming up joints, inner thighs at the same time Third layer muscles pelvic floor Back muscles to pull up, open up the chest Triceps Extension, belly on the long-box Plough and airplane Long box feet pulling straps single line

Reformer, Long Box for Back muscles to pull up, open up the chest and Triceps
Mermaid on the Cadillac

Suspended ab curl
I have the privilege to complete a package of Pilates session at the OptionsStudio RCBC in Makati City under the class of certified instructor Ms. Joella Bustamante. I asked a few questions I would like to know about this Exercise.
Is there a need for a Doctor's consent when doing Pilates?
Yes.
When doing Pilates, If you have injuries you have to make sure your doctor says you are safe to pursue a Pilates class.
Otherwise we can modify the exercises for you that's why we need to know if you have any injuries.
What should I tell my instructor if I am a newbie?
For first timers you need to be honest to your instructor tell that "I'm a first timer I've never done this"
And if you feel any pain you have to say it right away. There has to be constant communication before and during the exercise.
Pilates is not only for beginners. How about athletic people?
There's a challenging approach for athletes. We will start on targeting muscles one muscle at a time and then I will modify.
Obviously if you do Yoga or running you're into an athletic level na. So we give more challenging exercise.
Unless they say they have injuries that's when we target muscles.
How about those people who does not exercise at all and wanted to try Pilates?
For those naman who does not have any exercise in their life medyo mas mabait ang approach.
What is Pilates' role to our bones?
Not to bones but it's related to Skeletal.
Let's say you go to a chiropractor kasi he will align your bones para maging derecho sya. What we can work on is on the muscles which holds the bone. SO you can lessen your visits to your chiropractor.
Pero pag mga scoliosis na case wala na kaming magagawa. But we can modify the exercise for them.
Is Pilates a Foundation for all types of sport?
Yes.
Example Tennis, Soccer or Golf
When you do rotation movement, if you're beginner you will use your arms right?
So we are getting you aware of what are the muscles should be involved in a swing (rotation Movement)
Weather in Tennis, Basketball or whatever sports what you involve in are the muscles.
Same goes with Yoga. you have to be aware of what muscles are working in each pose to benefit more on the poses.
Effects? and how long will it last?
Lifetime, kasi once you know how to use your pelv floor you will find it easier. that's why I say its foundation...its life changing!
Why Pilates is Expensive?
That's why we are expensive because what we are imparting is knowledge on how your body is working, it's getting awareness, its educating people how to use your body...safely!
Experience is the best teacher
Learning Pilates is not achievable by just watching videos or researching how to do it, it's really the personal experience of doing it.
Iba yung one-on-one training, where the instructor sees how you are doing it.
Recommendations:
For Faster results make it 2-3x a week while for maintenance once a week is enough.
For beginners it is recommended that they do it more often so they can see faster development. Sayang yung pera nila kung once a week lang.
Rates:
You wont know until you try it yourself! Sign up and come in for a trial.
It's hard to explain kung anong ginagawa namin, kahit i-explian ko ng i-explain hindi nya pa rin ma a appreciate. One must try it!
Location:
OptionsStudio is at RCBC Plaza (15th Floor Tower 2) on Ayala Avenue, Powerplant Mall (Level R2), Rockwell Center, Makati City and Podium Mall in Ortigas. Soon to have in The Fort area.
Visit their website:
I am satisfied with the results. I may not gained weight (my goal) but I became physically strong. I learned how to contract my abs now and when is the right time I should be aware of doing it. I am going to apply my new knowledge to the existing exercises that I do such as Yoga, Swimming and Running to avoid injuries.
Cheers!
