The effects of Yoga in one's life

"Spreading the word about the YOGA FOR LIFE's program is already a great help" says James Rasco, a core group member of Yoga for Life.

Yoga for Life is the first ever community-based yoga class series, specially designed for the needs of people living with HIV and AIDS, but open as well to others who support them and want to experience the beauty of yoga. It offers a variety of postures, breathing practices and guided meditations that are directed towards alleviating the fear and stress associated with HIV and AIDS.

Last Saturday yours truly had the chance to attend at last Yoga for Life session in Century Plaza. After the session I did a hijack interview with one of the participants during the class.

James Rasco had just started doing Yoga last year as he was part of the organizers of this community. But before that, he never knew that he is going to do Yoga. "Nasa akin na lahat ng excuse para hindi kumuha ng work out regimen kasi sa tingin ko di ko kaya, wala akong time, pagod ako masyado, full time yung work ko" shared James.

Now that he's doing Yoga, he had the energy that he never felt before. He became became stronger and was able to maintain his weight. "Nagstart ako sa Yoga 4 Life once a week, every wednesday, malaking realization ko nun - meron pala akong energy".

While yoga has long proven its benefits to the health of the general population, yoga is quickly gaining ground as an important complementary therapy in the treatment of HIV, because of its adaptability, as well as its physiological and psychological benefits to those living with HIV.

What should we know about Antibiotics and the deadly Superbug?

Last June 23, a press conference regarding the spread of Superbug was held in Shangri La Edsa to warn the people
about the misuse of Antibiotics and the deadly Superbug. Now, this is quite alarming.

The Philippines' Department of Health released a warning about superbugs in April 2011 and according to a report on the website of Philippine News Daily, Dr. Eric Tayag, head of DOH - National Epidemiology Center (NEC) warned that treatment for a superbug infection will be very difficult, since there is no drug that is effective against it. It would also be difficult to stop it from entering the country due to the great number of travelers from abroad who arrive everyday.

Present on the presscon was Dr. Rontgene Solante, vice president of the Philippine Society of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases together with Mr. Lyle Joseph A. Morell, Watson's Director - Health Business Unit and Unilab's Atty. Jose Maria Ochave.

[caption id="attachment_1874" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Dr. Rontgene Solante, a consultant at SLH and vice president of the Philippine Society of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases"][/caption]

I myself consider this a very heavy issue to discuss but to make things clear and simple I asked the following questions to Dr. Rontgene Solante,

What should we know about Antibiotics?

Be Aware! Be Educated!

Antibiotics are medicines used to fight infections caused by bacteria are known as antibiotics. They do not work for viral infections like common colds and flu.

It is used to treat various types of infections caused by bacteria such as Respiratory Tract Infections, Gastrointestinal Tract Infections, Genitourinary Tract Infections, Skin and Soft Tissue Infection and other Susceptible Infections.

What is Superbug?

Ito ay isang Mikrobyo na dulot ng isang infection na hindi na tinatablan ng antibiotic. Kung meron mang gamot, napakamahal nito at kung magamot man siya malaki pa rin ang chance ng mortality.

The usual treatment for a person with superbug lasts for a week. But once treated with the right antibiotic it will definitely gone for good.

How to prevent and control the escalation of Superbug?

So while an organism develops and will become resistant still with the rampant use of antibiotic not only in the hospital but in the community as well.

Education in terms of prescription, compliance of the antibiotic are key and important measures to help us prevent this resistance.

Kadalasan galing ito sa community acquired infection , wherein most patients will self medicate with antibiotic.

You cannot buy Antibiotics without a doctor's prescription.

So what does Self Medication of Antibiotic means?

Ex. When your doctor prescribed you to buy a complete set. Usually its' for a one week medication. Dahil sa sobrang mahal ng antibiotic, bibili ka lang ng pang ilang araw at hindi mo na itutuloy ang paginom.

That's what we mean by Self Medication with Antibiotic.

That is why Watsons is selling the complete set of Antibiotic called compliance pack for a very affordable price. 60% lesser than the usual.

Determining a person infected with Superbug

It is difficult to tell thru symptoms alone, you need to do testing.

The existence

You wont know if it's Superbug unless you are in the hospital and the hospital has been able to isolate the organism.

Why?

Because most of the superbugs can be present with infections like Pneumonia, Abdominal Infection, Respiratory Tract Infection, even some skin and tissue infection.

The moment they are admitted in the hospital, that's the time the doctor will order for diagnostics test like culture and sensitivity. So it has to be isolated and it will be tested in the laboratory, and we will only know that it's a superbug because based on that test it will come out that the organism is isolated and is resistant to the antibiotic.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="540" caption="What we should know about Superbug?"][/caption]

How can we avoid Antibiotic Resistance ?

1. Consult with your healthcare provider for appropriate medication for your illness. Do not Self Medicate.

2. Communicate efficiently to your healthcare provider so that he will have a clear understanding of your symptoms and he can determine what type of antibiotic would be appropriate.

3. Strictly follow prescription medication directions. Always complete the treatment course even if you start to feel better.

How Yoga Practice Can Benefit Runners

The benefits of Yoga as exercise :

  • Gives you good breathing habit

  • Takes away medical problems

  • Helps in menopausal period

  • Gives you regular menstrual period

  • Improves the inner and outer body organs

  • Develops and balances good mental health

Yoga and running both requires practice, agility, flexibility and patience. Paulo Leonido , teacher of Yoga for Life notes "It gives you more mobility and endurance specially the pace when you're breathing".

Just like any sport, Yoga can enhance your body ang gets you conditioned for any physical activity.

I recently attended his class and learned some points in doing Yoga exercise.

Yoga maximizes breathing

In Yoga, you control your breathe. And you can use that control when you are into a run in order to achieve your distance goal. A good breathing practice gives you more energy, and that results a longer stamina when your run.

It gives you more sense of direction mentally and physically. It also utilizes all the body muscles and that makes a runner stronger.

It prevents injury because you develop flexibility. You run better when you're flexible, that's why runners do stretch before running.

It's good when you practice yoga before you get into any sport.

Yoga and Vegetarianism

Just a reminder, before you practice allow least 2 hours after eating a meal.

If you practice Yoga, you become aware not just to yourself but also to your environment, vegetarianism has that same goal - non violence.

The food that you eat also affects what you practice. Yoga develops your discipline that's why it helps a lot when you are into a diet which aims loosing weight.

What causes an Erectile Dysfunction?

Women outlived men by 5 to 10 years. Do you want our Men to be dying young? Of course not!

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="640" caption="Dr. Quincy Raya"][/caption]

The Mens Health Society was recently launched in the country in response to the current trend in Medicine for Men's preventive care. This also refers to measures taken to prevent male related disease as well as curing them or treating the symptoms.

The culture in medicine care has become a disease care, doctors will care for a patient when they already have a disease. It is better if doctors will actually care for us even before we get sick. And that's the real definition of healthcare. Doctors actually caring for patient and making sure that their health not their disease is taken care of.

Doctors should be trained to ask questioons and make you feel comfortable, questioins like

  • How often do you exercise?

  • What kind of diet do you have?

  • What are your sexual practices?

This is why Mens Health Society was formed spearheaded by Dr. Quincy Raya of Asian Institue of Longevity Medicine.

Women's health has always been well taken care of because when women get pregnant Doctors make sure that they are free of disease and ready to give the baby get into the work.

Now men has been neglected, specially that men has this macho image that if they have a weakness, disease and they have sexual dysfunction it is not easy for them to admit this.

The Asian Institute of Longevity Medicine, represented by Dr. Quincy Raya is currently spearheading the establishment of the men's health concerns. Anually, June is the International Men's Health Month while International Men's Health Week will be on June 13-19 2011, leading to Father's Day. This celebration carries the purpose of improving health outcomes and greater life expectancy in men, providing better access to care for men and facilitating the particiaption of men in their preventive healthcare and improve quality of life.

There are some important points Dr. Quincy Raya shared to us during the presscon:

As doctors We need to make men comfortable enough to tell them about their weakness and disease. The problem sometimes is we are afraid to tell to doctors because they are unfriendly, they're quiet judgemental and sometimes they just give pill for every ill.

Influence Government Policies

I know its challenging thing to do. But if it was done in Singapore I hope we can also do that here. We are coordinating male dominated groups, stakeholders, Asian Institute of Longevity and government bodies.

Some issues tackled during the presscon

Is it awkward if a doctor is a girl?

I think as a doctor you should know what questions to ask, and need to make them comfortable telling about your weaknesses and erectile dysfunction.

Circumcision issues

Some say that with good and proper hygiene you don't need to get circumsion but study states that when you get a circumsion there is a lesser risk you get Sexaully Transmitted Diseases and UTI.

What causes an Erectile Dysfunction?

Poor Lifestyle such as smoking, poor diet and a sedentary lifetstyle meaning you don't get exercise.

So one of our aim is to encourage men to have a healthy lifestyle for themselves and for their family.

Mark Zuckerberg planning to go vegetarian?

I just read this from Organic Authority that Mark Zuckerberg announced that he will only eat animals he actually kills himself this year in a self-imposed ‘personal challenge.’

[caption id="attachment_1661" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="The Green Facebook"][/caption]

OMG, Mark Zuckerberg becomes vegetarian?  So he's gonna change Facebook's color into green? Lol !

The Green Facebook or The Green Lantern?

Here's what Organic Authority posted:
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced that he will only eat animals he actually kills himself this year in a self-imposed ‘personal challenge.’

The 27 year-old billionaire innovator and controversial figurehead of the most popular social networking website in the world told Fortune magazine in an email interview that the only meat he will eat, he will kill himself, which now includes seafood like lobster (his first kill), a pig and a goat. “I’m eating a lot healthier foods. And I’ve learned a lot aboutsustainable farming and raising of animals,” he says. “It’s easy to take the food we eat for granted when we can eat good things every day.”

Actively participating in where his food comes from is a way to help Zuckerberg be thankful for the food he has to eat he said in the Fortune interview: “I think many people forget that a living being has to die for you to eat meat, so my goal revolves around not letting myself forget that and being thankful for what I have. This year I’ve basically become a vegetarian since the only meat I’m eating is from animals I’ve killed myself. So far, this has been a good experience.”

Will this dietary change last beyond the one-year ‘personal challenge’ timeframe? Zuckerberg’s not saying yet, but if his emphasis on the benefits of reducing a dependence on factory farm meat can go as viral as Facebook, he could have an impact far greater than just on his own health.

Philippines’ Cosplay Queen Alodia Gosiengfiao trends on Yahoo

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="466" caption="Alodia Gosiengfiao Easy Pha-max Wheatgrass"][/caption]

A few days ago I did a post about Cosplay goddesses Alodia and Ashley Gosiengfiao as endorsers of Wheatgrass Easy Pha-max. I was surprised to get more than 300 likes for that post. I remember the time when Mike Abundo said: "If you blog Alodia, expect a spike on traffic"

Now it's proven. No wonder why a lot of companies get her as endorser, it's because she really is that influential. I wonder how much TF she gets for her endorsements? Whatever the price, I know she deserves it.

And because of that, Philippines’ Cosplay Queen Alodia Gosiengfiao trends on Yahoo. Each week, Yahoo! search editors analyze online queries to see the themes and trends which bubbled to the surface.

Last week (23-29 May) the web was buzzing with pop culture icons including Cosplay Queen, Indie Prince and Primetime Queen.

Here's the complete list:

Philippines’ “Cosplay Queen,” “Indie Prince,” and the Kapuso Network’s “Primetime Queen” are among last week’s top 10 Pinoy pop culture royals trending on Yahoo!

Alodia Gosiengfiao: The 23 year old “Cosplay Queen” tops this week’s list after she and her sister Ashley featured in the widely publicized launch of Easy Pha-max Wheatgrass ready-to-drink health beverage TVC. Alodia’s affair with cosplay – short for costume play or dressing up as a fictional character, started when she was 15, consequently opening up opportunities for her in the entertainment world. The Animax VJ who hosts ABS-CBN’s prank show Laugh Out Loud with Luis Manzano was signed up earlier this month as the brand ambassador by Globe Telecom for its mobile Internet service.

Dennis Trillo: In the June 2011 issue of YES! Magazine, Jennylyn Mercado detailed her reasons for breaking up with actor Dennis Trillo. The Kapuso actress stated how a small argument turned into a huge fight that ended the relationship, eventually hurting her. Netizens searched for Dennis’ version of the issue but he refused to comment instead stating, “The truth is, I really don’t want to talk about it because it’s done and over with.”

Bagyong Chedeng: Tropical Storm Chedeng entered Philippines on the morning of May 23. The typhoon which left four people dead and P14 million in damages, reminded people of the destruction that Typhoon Ondoy had brought in 2009. Chedeng also brought to light PAGASA’s (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) conflicting weather forecasts with Japan Meteorological Agency’s weather predictions.

Sam Pinto: The 21-year-old actress and model momentarily rose to the top spot when she overtook Marian Rivera and Angel Locsin in the last week’s unofficial results of FHM Philippines’ 100 Sexiest Women in the World 2011. The Captain Barbell actress, who was also recently chosen as an endorser for San Miguel Light Beer and Fitrum dietary supplement, has since climbed back to the third place.

Coco Martin:

Earlier this month, Philippines’ “Indie Prince” received the Gawad Urian’s Actor of the Decade Award for 2000 to 2009 along with actresses Gina PareƱo and Cherry Pie Picache. Coco Martin, born as Rodel Nacianceno, received the honor for his outstanding work in films including Jay, Tambolista, Daybreak, Kinatay, and Noy from the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (the Filipino Film Critics).

American Idol:

Seventeen-year old country crooner Scotty McCreery became the new American Idol after defeating the judges’ choice for the title Lauren Alaina. Scotty performed alongside Tim McGraw and sang a duet, Live Like You're Dying. "It felt like a dream," Scotty said about his victory.

Jiro Manio:

een actor Jiro Manio, The former FAMAS and Urian best actor award winner for his role in Magnifico, has reportedly volunteered to undergo rehabilitation for drug abuse. He was part of ABS-CBN network’s roster of talents and was pulled out off the television series Tayong Dalawa for "unprofessional and irresponsible behavior”. According to a PEP report, Jiro’s father assured his fans that the 19-year old actor “is committed to becoming a better person”.

Marian Rivera:

GMA Network’s controversial star returns to primetime as she plays the title role of warrior princess Amaya, an epic series set in the Central Visayas in the 1500s. Actors Sid Lucero and model-turned-actor Mikael Daez, who was also trending in Yahoo! search last week for an alleged photo scandal, join her in the cast. The mestiza actress is often criticized for her imperfect English and alleged snobbish behavior.
