What could go wrong with a massage?

What is a chiropractic treatment?

Wikipedia says chiropractic is a health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health.

It is a therapy which involves manipulation of the spine.

Joint pains, stiffness, injuries and scoliosis are among the usual case that a chiropractor cures. When the spine is properly aligned it will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication.

When spine is manipulated by a chiropractor, it restores mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury caused by a traumatic event, such as falling, or repetitive stress, such as sitting without proper back support.

"It is a medicine without medicine" says Dr. Don Juan Moore, Jr a licensed and board certified American Chiropractor of NY Theraspine.

NY Theraspine (New York Theraspine) is a clinic owned by Michelle Natividad, a physical therapist who specializes in Myofascial Physical Therapy. The clinic is located at 73-G Sct. Dr. Lazacano cor. Sct. Tuazon, Brgy. Laging Handa, Quezon City.

Completing the team is Leopoldo Haboc, Jr who is an occupational therapist. With its team of friendly, highly-qualified, even award-winning chiropractors and physical therapists accredited abroad, NY Theraspine offers the best personalized treatments for the most common neck and back pains, to posture problems, and for stroke rehabilitation.

During the bloggers visit to NY Theraspine I learned so much about wrong practices we do when we feel body pain.

The wrong practice of massage

1.  A back massage right ahead is a "no no", a hot-pack should be applied first to avoid shock to muscles. Muscle shock can worsen the injury.

"May pain na kahit magpamassage ka ng mag pamassage hindi naaalis”

"Yung mga patient na pumupunta dito sinasabi nila hindi ako makalakad, hindi ako makaupo....dahil merong pain...yun ang chine check namin upon assessment" said Haboc.

2.  It is okay to take a bath after a massage as long as it's hot water

3.  Hard massage is dangerous

“Like body spa and therapy, the machine targets the pain slowly. Hindi nya basta binabasag yung lamig kung tawagin natin. It relieves the lactic acid that causes muscle spasm,” Haboc said

How do NY Theraspine assess a patient?

First is taking a medical history and performs a physical examination

The treatment plan may involve one or more manual adjustments. The common painful part is the back, the goal includes the restoration of function and prevention of injury in addition to back pain relief.

“We do first medical assessment, we ask the patient’s medical histories, pag wala naman we go ahead unless they have bone fracture. Two to three people here conduct the assessment. Even if you don’t tell us you have high blood o diabetes but once we ask you about the medications you take, du’n namin malalaman ang sakit mo,” Natividad adds.

Weight Management and Fitness Monitoring

A patient will not end in consultation and treatment alone, NY Theraspine has gym dedicated to evaluate and assess one's physical condition. It is also a tool being used to patients who undergoes stroke rehabilitation.

If you are a patient or planning to get a consultation inform them regarding your medical history, including ongoing medical conditions, current medications, traumatic/surgical history, and lifestyle factors.

Think twice before you schedule that next visit to the spa…
